Data refresh = Algo update ?

Or are these 2 different things? If you update the algo, you'll get a data refresh?

This is the worst roller coaster ride I have every been on and I want off!:( I dropped 80% of June 27th back up to normal on July 27th now back down 80% on Aug. 17th. You would think they have to get this problem solved eventually. I understand dips here and there but these major plumiest in Google traffic can't be normal. And why do the pages go supplemental every time my traffic drops. There has to be something to that. Last time my pages were all supplemental on every data center. This time however on half of the data centers I have at least the first couple pages correct and then all supplements after that.

Check out this video by Matt Cutts which explains (as much as he is allowed to do) the difference between an algo update, index update, and a data refresh.

i think your back links matter. Search for word "buy vigrx" on google.com and analyse the site ranking 1st.

Thank you, Erkanbs. My primary site took a huge hit In Google rankings yesterday and I've been fretting about it ever since. But your message puts a whole new perspective on what is and is not a REAL "disaster".

We are all well aware of how bad natural disasters can be, I feel this is a pointless reference, disaster is clearly a word used in everday business situations and PC attitudes have no place picking at it and lowering the tone of a perfectly unrelated thread

I think the idea is that the algo is updated, then the data is refreshed to see what will happen... which means for me, a climb for a few weeks, stabilization for a week or two, then a dump.

I can see these in page impressions on my AdSense csv thru dP's Google Adsense Charting Tool. It is somewhat evident via the Keyword Tracker.

Yesterday was the bounce back to the top I've been waiting for, for the last two months. I don't know how long it will stay this way, but right now, my site has even better rankings than it did before the update. Personally, I think they got this one right this time.

    What the hell?

One of my sites, that has been climbing slowly but surely, has gone from over 1000 pages indexed, to *8*

7 of which are supplemental, and really old (and not really valid anymore) pages to boot...

    WTF!?
