Looking for free web services that can retrieve longitude and latitude from an IP

Discussion in 'Google API' started by xhanch, Nov 3, 2009.

    Hi,

I am looking for a web service that provide a functionality to convert IP to longitude and latitude worldwide. I need it for the Google Maps. I tried to place a default pointer on the map based on the visitor's IP. So far, I only can found an API to convert IP to country.

    Any body know?

Too bad that it is not totally free (The price is so expensive) and It does not provide an API (we have to store the database to our server).

I am looking something similar to http://www.hostip.info/use.html. hostip provide an API that return XML code of an IP details. The weakness of hostip is only that their database is not complete enough.

I do have experience with google maps. I even have written an article about it.
    http://isusx.com/use-google-maps-api-to-enrich-your-website/

I just need a third party API that can convert IP to long lat.

To save yourself all those webservice calls you can download the MaxMind GeoCity database and load it into MySQL..

    http://www.maxmind.com/app/geolitecity

    http://www.maxmind.com/app/csv

Then it is a very simple MySQL query.. 99% accurate, no network latency..

    There aren't ones that exist.

I think, if the feature you are adding to your website that tracks geo-location is not contributing to your business, or your business isn't already making that much money—it is probably not worth adding that feature anyway.

I can see how geolocators can improve CTRs and improve overall website visitor quality, but if you are not making at least how much it costs to set up, then it's probably not worth it at this point for your website.

I would try not to think of it that the feature would add value to my site just because I am adding it to my site. This is one of the key laws of self-sabotaging your own intentions (Psychologists believe that people who work too much start to sabotage their intentions, it's a body's way of saying no)

it must be available...since analytics can tell city locations from IPs.
