I've done a 301 permanent redirect to on of my pages about a month ago. So far my backlinks were not redirected and my ranking dropped from 4th position to 15th. Any ideas?
Sometimes it takes a little bit for the search engines to update their cache. A lot times it can take months for your old urls to get changed in the listings. If have lost ranking doing 301s before also but it was usually from directing a smaller site with a relevant url name that had keyword to a bigger site with a url name without keyword for that ranking. So maybe it is from lost url weight or it could just be a normal drop and might go back up out of the blue. just a couple of ideas.
I was think a little more about 301s and I looked at some of that it did and noticed the old address had a lot of backlinks. It kind of made me wonder how much backlink juice is lost in 301s. I mean the search engines know you moved but do they really log all of your backlinks as moved in rankins also?
yeah you can lose a bit of the link juice with the redirection. most should come back when the search engine updates
I use 301's for product domains to redirect to specific pages on my affiliate directory, and I see no problems with SEO and ranking by doing this.
Are you sure you've done the 301 redirect effectively without leaving any chance for error? Check your site using google webmaster tools> diagnostic area to find any issue related to indexing.
Hey PCZ I have had to use redirects lots of times when remapping a new website with different URL’s. You properly have already done this but still just in case you haven’t. First ensure that the redirects are 301 and not 302, 302 is classed as a temporary redirect and not permanent so PR won’t be passed over. I always double check the redirect with (w.internetofficer.com/seo-tool/redirect-check) Next I redo my xml site map and submit it back to Google. Good luck my man!
