To stop webmasters (or at least slow down the casual observer) from trying to reverse engineer the algorithm

this is true, but if somebody really wanted to get stuck into the google algorythm, i think it could be done by exploiting GWT. it would be great if 10 experts from around the globe all colaborated and took the top 10 for any 1 niche. then compare and analyse the data in GWT and try to find holes in the algo

just looking at your link service and read the small print, can you confirm that the links your selling as PR5 links are actually on a page that has a PR5. or are these just angela paul links?

Webmasters can view all of their backlinks in Google Webmaster Tools, but Google only shows the "important" backlinks when the "link:" operator is used.

Nonsense. On average, Google WT shows about 50% of the links reported by Yahoo Site Explorer. I made an Excel spreadsheet of the links reported for ALL my pages. The links that Google shows are just "some links", the criteria for which changes over time. Two months ago, Google said one on my sites had over 8,000 links - they now say 2,700, when in fact, I have gained links, not lost links.

Why they do this, I don't know. But you sure can't use GWMT to get a clear picture of your actual links.

i wonder what kind of resources us as webmasters would need to spider the whole web.

i mean it cant be beyond the relm of impossibility for a member hear to write a crawler and then its just a case of where to store it.

that would be a great project to be involved in
