Only 3 years late! This was August 2003, and it did not look like Earth had 2 moons! Mars was just about big enough to make out that it was circular (with the naked eye) rather than just a bright point of light.

It just came to me an hour ago and i read about it a few days back, not probably 3 years ago

 

If it was going to be as big as the moon on August 27th don't you think it would be as big as 1/2 a moon by now? Matt is right, the closest Mars has been or will be in our lifetime was 3 years ago and it was slightly bigger than a point of light.
