I am a full time writer and I got some regular clients from Dp and I am busy most of the days writing for them. If you are a full time writer, then you have the potential of making $500-750 a month and If part time, then $250-300 can be your monthly income in my opinion.

I have a feeling you're probably talking about content writing at those rates rather than copywriting. ;)

The answer to the question 'can a copywriter make a great living'? is 'yes and no. It depends.'. It is yes when you are on the staff of a popular magazine or newspaper or very famous freelance writer whose work gets paid highly (because of an established track record - a columnist like Neil J. Rubenking or something like that.

If anyone is having trouble getting paid, like Rexertea said, you might consider using freelance.com or guru.com because they have an escrow service. You have have the money paid to the host website and they hold it for you before you start the work. The client can refuse to pay, but he or she needs to give them a damn good reason first. And both parties get to leave feedback about the other... And in future everyone can see who is a bad payer or who does bad work. :D

    Good luck!

Well then you haven't heard of Bill Glazer, Jay Abraham and Dan Kennedy!

Bill Glazer's 10 sales letters have made a million dollars each for their owners.

He's the biggest guy known on earth as a copywriter and equivalent to Jay Abraham and Dan Kennedy.

If you think Frank Kern writes copy himself, it's not true. John Carlton wrote copy for his sales letter from which he made a million dollars in 24 hours.

You don't have to be a staff writer for a major publication or a "famous" freelance writer to get paid highly. I'd bet most of the high-paid freelance writers out there are people folks haven't even heard of. A lot of copywriters make "great" livings, but due to the nature of the work (much of it's ghostwritten) you wouldn't know who's behind it unless they told you.

Thats a huge list of writers there. It would have been much better if we are made aware of how to get trained to be a copywriter too.

Read their books, blogs and websites. Take the courses and classes offered. Study effective materials that convert.

I'm choosy on copywriting projects, but they can easily bring in four figures or more. And don't knock content writing - it might not have the glamor or the earning potential as copywriting, but I have regular (monthly in most cases) deals that bring in 4 figures for pure content.

The best in any professional make a lot of money. It doesn't matter the line of work.

A more appropriate question is can an average copywriter make a living. For example, an average bookkeeper can make 60K+. Can a "average copywriter" make a living? I think you can provided your prices are worth the conversion rates you are getting, and you meet deadlines. Professionalism goes a long ways.

Of course, copywriters can make a good living. In my opinion, the income depends on the quality of the work that the copywriter provide.

I'm studying how to write white papers. There's a lot of money
in B2B. A friend told me about it and he makes $3000, sometimes
more, for just one white paper.

It's a lot of work, but well worth it. One client a month brings
security for him and his family...

So yes, copywriters can make a lot of money and there are
different niches we can work in...some pay a heck of a lot
    better than others...

This thread is very valuable to me. My friend and I are looking to start a writing/proofreading business. Tell me, what are some popular topics/niches to write about?

Copywriters sure earn big money , but you need to be famous and good at the work you do.

Yes, you need to be good at what you do, but no you do not need to be famous. You've probably never heard of most copywriters who are earning a "great living."
