My brother has put on quite a bit of weight recently, and he is constantly nagging about it, he is 13. Would taking diet pills be safe?

Any body knows please tell me

Get him to modify his diet to where he has a caloric deficit, throw in regular exercise, and cut out any junk/comfort foods, and he should be fine. Diet pills do not always work, but it depends. He could benefit from using acai berry pills for example (not the greatest example) but the whole form is much better, and no matter what it will not make him lose weight - calorie intake, burnt calories, etc, is what is important. However, if you are talking about other types of diet pills such as fat burners, sure...they do work, to an extent. They help increase your metabolic rate, surpress your appetite, etc, but just using those supplements will not do a lot.

Basically, you have to look at his diet and exercise routine. Look up what foods he should be eating, some examples are chicken, fish (tuna, salmon, etc), salads, and other vegetables. Keep in mind that he should cut out salad dressing and other unhealthy condiments. For snacks, negative/zero calorie foods can be very helpful as they will not add fat, and can even help burn a few calories. Search for a list of these types of foods and use those as well. Water is also very important, and it can work as a negative calorie item as well. This is because a cold glass of ice water can pump up your heart rate and increase your metabolism.

Exercise is definitely a key factor to fat loss. You cannot lose fat from just a single area, it will be a full body loss. In order to lower your body fat percentage you will want to do two things, ideally, cardio and weightlifting. Some people may argue with me and say that a 13 year old should not lift weights, but my son started at that age and it did not have any major effects on him (he has developed elbow tendinitis though).

When creating an exercise routine for weight loss you will probably want to focus more on the cardio for now. Lifting weights is great for muscle building and conditioning but right now he has to cut, and he probably does not have much muscle to worry about preserving. The best type of exercise for fat loss is high intensity interval training workouts. This is most commonly done when jogging, running, and sprinting, but can be adapted to other cardio forms such as biking or (to an extent) swimming.

High Intensity Interval Training (search it for full info) is the best way to break a major sweat and burn a lot of calories. By jogging at a moderate pace for an hour, you do pretty much nothing. You can break a sweat at low intensity but it does not help nearly as much as high intensity exercises do. For this, you would want to start with a casual jog on the track or outside, and keep the same pace for fifteen minutes. During this time you will want to pace yourself so that you are jogging at a speed that you can talk but cannot hold a normal conversation.

After the fifteen minutes are up you will start the intervals. This is where you start sprinting (running as fast as possible) and continue to do so for 60 seconds. After that, drop back down to the jogging speed you maintained earlier, keep at this pace for 60 seconds. After that minute is up, sprint again, repeat the process for five intervals. Trust me, this will burn off the calories like nothing!

There are also other options that he could consider, which are mainly based on your diet. For instance, he could go on a low carb/no carb diet (Atkins) or a variation of it. The ketogenic diets work great and are definitely a superior option to Atkins if he intends on lifting weights at the same time.

Enjoy...also, look up reviews for any supplements before purchasing them. There is already loads of info on all the diet pills on the market, new or old. Bodybuilding.com would be a good site to look at when looking for weight loss supplements.
