Yahoo is cheaper but google has higher traffic.
I doubt that google is more effective, i think they are both equal.

I would say google too. 80% of the websites out there are using Google adsense.

if you are just starting with ppc... go with google.

Then when you find a profitable campaign... copy it to yahoo and msn, and try to squeeze as much money as possible from that campaign..

Without a doubt, Google AdWords. Google commands the market share of internet searches (65% in US & 85% in the UK) and so it makes sense to get the largest slice of the pie working well for you, before venturing into other engines.

Google has much more traffic and the min bids on search are $0.01.
Yahoo has less traffic and the min bids on search are $0.10

If you have a successful campaign run it on google and yahoo.

Yahoo is cheaper and MSN is cheaper yet. you can still make good money outside of Google. If you are just starting out and you don't have a big budget, go with MSN first until you get used to making good campaigns and your ROI is doing well enough to compete in Google. This is just a suggestion, stay away from any keywords that Google suggest you use. Get your own keywords doing a good keyword research with a keyword tool other than Google adwords tool. Google's tool can be used as a starting point. Good Luck.

Yahoo and MSN users are wealthier and more focussed in their buying decisions. The kind of products that do well on Yahoo are typically high end high value products like Home Theatre systems.
Google is ok but note that many potential buyers do their research on Google so you may get idle clicks that will cost you money if you are on a shoe string.
So depends what you want to set up a campaign for.

Google Adwords should always be the priority. 80 % market is looking google for information.
Secondly, Bids are high depending on the Quality Score for your ad. text. So try to increase quality score and your ads CPC automatically gets cheaper.
So act smartly by optimizing your ad text and choosing your Keywords

Google adwords (but do your research). People who lose money on Google adwords do NO research and end up losing rather than gaining. A simple ad with some great keywords.

This is bad advice!! Although keywords are available at a cheaper rate on MSN Ad Centre and Yahoo Search Marketing, the search volume is poor and conversion rates are even poorer. Create a well optimised campaign on Google AdWords, and then when you can do no more with it but still have budget to spend, then move into YSM and MSN.

A shop on the outskirts of town (ie MSN) and one on a bustling main street (ie Google) - which do you think is going to yeild better returns?

I would add in that it depends on the location of the traffic that you would want to drive in. For example, in certain parts of Asia, yahoo is the dominate SE while in North America google is the dominate SE. Do a bit of research and see which one better fits you.
