Found an interesting blog post about SEO. Some of it seems over the top, but otherwise some good points are made.

Full article: Spammers, Evildoers, and Opportunists. He also wrote a great follow up article called SEO FAQ.

    Thoughts?

I dont think its right. Search engine optimizer are not scammers. They help website owners to achieve what they want. If website is live, but if website owners are not able to get what they need from there website, then it is of no use. SEO helps them to do so. This article author completely spoiling image of search engine optimizers.

Of course we're poison. SEO'ers are like tobacco companies, we know we're making poison, but we'll never admit it...

Rubbish. We help people get their websites found online. We simply provide a service that people can learn about if they so wish and do themselves, but many choose to outsource.

SEOs are no more poison than web designers are.

The 'telling people about it' - IS seo
A large part of it anyway.
the other part is telling the person who made this 'beautiful, confident blahdeblah' stuff like not to do it all in flash, so that search engines can't see it.

Thank you for writing this. All the other posts that are barely english (aka seojohnny) and defending SEO, have no idea what they are talking about.

    My advice:

Do not pay for SEO, do it yourself. Remember, you know what is best for your website, so why should you trust some weirdo who can't even comprehend what they're doing except trying to get traffic. If you hand your website over to someone else who does a poor job on SEO, ends up submitting your site to places which only harm the search results then you will have irreparable damage to your website reputation.

He says that good advice is obvious - only it isn't. Some of the advanced aspects of SEO are far from obvious. It only becomes obvious when you take the time to learn about SEO. For many it is a steep learning curve.

He says SEO is poisoning the web. What he is referring to is black hat SEO used by spammers. This does not lead me to conclude that the problem is with SEO, but the way it can be manipulated by some. There are a lot of things that are poisoning the web and I wouldn't include ethical SEO in that list.

All this talk about "building a reputation" is rubbish, because it's not applicable to the vast majority of people who are promoting their sites. We can't all have a reputation - by its very nature reputation is only bestowed on a very small minority of people.

I say that the article is nothing more than linkbait and doesn't put forth any valid arguments against the use of search engine optimisation.

It's not applicable to talk about building a reputation because you don't have one? It's not the nature of reputation to only be 'bestowed' on a few people. Reputation comes after a great service or product, not before.

Only a small percentage of all sites on the internet are reputable, because only a small percent actually have quality.

Everyone should really learn to do their own SEO before outsourcing it. You learn so much about how things work in the IM world by learning it. Outsource it when your busy and successful and the time to do it is costing you more money then paying for it.

I have found a lot of supposed SEO people are scammers any ways. Most just read some articles and claim they are experts. Not to bag on you guys that are actually good at what you do but like everything 1 bad apple.

At the end of the day, in Google's eyes, SEOs shouldn't exist. Sites should link to eachother naturally & in the end the cream will rise to the top.

Then, along comes an SEO. He / She takes a site that should be on page 5 & artificially creates links to make the site APPEAR to be more popular & authoritative than it actually is. They are manipulating the SERPs.

Then, when the sites that SHOULD be at the top see that this other medium quality site has hijacked their rankings - they go out & hire SEOs of their own.

Link SPAM was born. . .

What others are thinking about SEO and the techniques they are using on, may be bad for SEOs. It is true that SEO makes you able to complete your goals with your web site. If in this web forest anyone making you much capable to do things in your own way, there should not be such issues to show off they are scammed.
