links are really very important but it should be kept in mind that links should be from relevant websites (ideally with good PR) otherwise Google considers it in a negative sense.
There is no limit on link exchange that you can do. But dont go for link farm etc.Do link exchage with good sites in you domain.It will surely help.
It's correct that there's no real limit, or disadvantage to having too many, but reciprocal links have less weight than one way links.
