images counting as backlinks

    if someone uses your image and embeds it on their website would google count that as a backlink?

    Yes, they will...especially if the site linking to yours is somehow related /niche related I mean/.
    What you loose are the rankings for a particular keyword/s from the anchor text of a text link, but maybe they use the alt-tags as such already...

    If that picture has the function of a link button to your site yes. Otherwise its just a copyright infringement/theft.
