Help with my son's math homework please

    Okay, I'm feeling stupid. I always help with "arts" end of the homework (English, History, etc.) and I leave the math to my analytical thinking wife ...

    Anyway, that's not possible tonight and I'm feeling even more frustrated and stupid - please help!

    I'd be most appreciative of some help; thanks!

    7 Zebras
    5 Ostrich

    7 x 4 legs = 28 legs
    5 x 2 legs = 10 legs

    Total = 38 legs

    Total (ostrich +zebra) 5=7=12

    12 x 2=24

    24+ 14 = 38

    Hence Proved :)

    Okay, that one I can follow... one thing I remember, though it may not apply here is a2 + b2 = c2 ... or is this not the proper application of the Pythagorean Theorem?

    4*4=16 + 3*3=9 = 25 (5*5); hence x = 5?

    That is true

    That is what is used to derive the answer :)

    It is that, in a square triangle (where an angle is equal to 90 degree as depicted by the box in the diagram) the square of the length of the two sides a and b is always equal to the square of the third side i.e. is the one opposite the box :)

    I feel a little better and somewhat validated; thanks!

    I remember having to ask my Dad about this a few years ago ... actually, I was putting stakes down to mark where I was going to build an out building and wanted to make sure it was squared - he reminded me of this forumla from Geometry for me to check my work so to speak - to ensure the four intial posts were set at the right lengths, angles, etc. to ensure the building was "squared" so the rest would fall into place easier. By the way, I still screwed up laying the four initial posts and after a while, each individual board and piece of siding had to be measured for a specific fit ... never did fess up to Dad about that, but when he came to visit the following year, it was one of the first things he noticed on his own.

    Anyway, I pefer simple math: 1+1= 1 more

    Hehe remembering maths is always fun! I remmeber those old school days when we used to solve maths before the teacher hehe!!!

    Anyways, I don't know if over their they require only answer .... in India you need to explain it and so if I were given that problem it would look something like this!

    Let,
    Ostrich be 'x'
    Zebras be 'y'

    Therefore the number of heads = (1x + 1y) ----- (1)
    The total number of Ostrich legs = 2x
    The total number of Zebra Legs = 4y
    Therefore, total number of legs = 2x + 4y ----- (2)

    From the question and (1) and (2),
    2x + 4y = 2(x + y) + 14

    2x + 4y = 2x + 2y + 14 ----------- (3)

    2x + 4y - 2x - 2y = 14

    2y = 14

    y = 7

    therefore, the total number of zebras in the zoo is 7 :)

    Solved it

    I think there is a simple answer.

    ostriches have one head and two legs.

    zebras have one head and four legs.

    "14 more twice of the heads" means 14/2 = 7 zebras there.

    But you can not tell how many ostriches there. It can be any number!

    Calculus appears quite tough when you have a first look at it ,but when you practice it s pretty easy.
    Integration,limits and derivatives are fun to work with
    After all "practice makes a man perfect"
