Start SSL lasts for a year, Comodo is only a 90 day trial. Comodo certificates are expensive, and you won't be able to get the same type of certificate as you'll get in the 90 day trial. I have a Comodo trial certificate now which is about to expire. I'm probably not going to renew and go with AlphaSSL/GlobalSign... I don't really like Verisign much.

Now, if you are starting a business and not doing business under your name then you will need to buy a certificate from somewhere. Start SSL only gives certificates to individuals.

There are some websites that offer cheap SSL certificates... dynadot.com is one.

You can purchase rapidSSL.com certificates through enom with a free reseller account for $9.95. That's pretty cheap. If you want to start an ecomerce site it's worth investing in a non-free SSL certificate and you will get some kind of logo to display on your page and further gain your customers trust by not using a free certificate.

Having a valid and reputable SSL certificate is especially important since you are a new company customers will be looking more at this.

Cheapest is go to name cheap reg a domain like a .com/.net(doest work on .info) use 10% discount coupon then click the free SSL option in checkout, so you will receive a free ssl and whois guard for a $8 domain

Mentos: GoDaddy SSL is $29.99, where do you get them for 12.99?
Verisign is the oldest authority and more reputable than Comodo.
As a side note you can't even buy the exact type of certificate that's done in the Comodo trial.
Comodo certificates start at about $79.95 a year, and this guy is looking for something FREE.

You can purchase rapidSSL.com certificates through enom with a free reseller account for $9.95.

    AlphaSSL is 11.99 through dynadot.com

    RapidSSL is 15.99 through dynadot.com

...so GoDaddy is not the cheapest.
