I suggest you to use Google Adwords: Keyword Tool - there you can get.,
    # new ideas for your keyword
    # search volume for common keyword

Though, the search volume is not accurate, but it was very valuable tool for keyword selection and targeting..!

Google Adwords is good. And why don't you try the Google insight? You can also try Google insights for keywords research. Google Insights is good since it provides a visual representation of regional interest on a map. :)

Gogole Keyword tool all the way....this will tell you the monthly search volume.....then compare each word with the amount of competition.....then you can gauge which words to target. What has the least competition while providing the most searches in a month!

    This.

But a much more thorough way is to take a step further and look at what keywords your competitors are optimizing for.

Just remember that a keyword tool can't tell you if a keyword is profitable. Just pick something where people spend alot of money or have an immediate need for.

First you should know the niche of your site.
Then think of keywords that you will search to find the site as if you're the visitors.
List the keywords and use google keyword suggestion tool to get different variations and synonyms of keywords.

Keywords are an integral part of any online advertising campaign; however what is sometimes overlooked is the equal importance of negative keywords which are word filters that disqualify ads being triggered by users search query. For instance if “iPhone” is one of your keyword, each time somebody runs a search for that keyword your ad will be displayed. If someone were to run a search for the term “iPhone problems” your ad will also be displayed, since the main keyword “iPhone” is present in the search query. To avoid bloating total impressions, with irrelevant searches it’s important to add “Problem” as your negative keyword, so that “ iPhone Problem” query wont trigger your ad.
