Redirecting a link question

I want to link from article directories to a 2.0 website like blogger, wetpaint, etc. not a regular domain. But I'd hate to see something go wrong or change with the 2.0 site (like Geocities) and hundreds or thousands of article links go dead.

Can I get a domain and do a redirect (php, html, cpanel, htaccess)? Or would that be the same as linking directly to the domain and not the 2.0 site?

Basically I've heard that linking to a 2.0 site works better than linking directly to the domain. Would a redirect work for this purpose? Or would the searchengines just see it as linking to the domain instead?

    Thanks

If you link to the domain, then the domain will get credit for having the backlinks. some redirects (301) will forward that credit on to the social media site, but that's generally regarded as 'forging' and definitely shouldn't be used long term.
