I've started UK directory and installed [*.co.uk only] filter and received many negative messages about this filter. I'm changed filter to [*.co.uk|*.com|*.org|*.net] and now I received a tons of non UK related suggestions.

Have you any ideas how to protect regional directory from non regional related suggestions?

You can extract their on site description and check for keywords like England, Scotland, ... etc, if the site fails all checks delete it (i assume its you don't want to waste all your time manually checking that tons of submissions no *.co.uk).

The best way to make sure your directory remains regional is to manually review each site. Simply allowing only co.uk is not gonna cut it because as others mentioned, not every UK based site is going to have that top or second level domain extension.

Unless it's just for businesses, you would want *.*.uk rather than just .co.uk in any case. Try setting a captcha question that requires local knowledge.

Very bad business module I would say. If you are running a business directory, you must take the time to filter out submissions. UK based sites or portals can also have a .com domain or .org

I would suggest that the filter must be removed.

Your idea about local knowledge captcha is very interesting. More than 90% added sites isn't uk related.

I think you need to make it very clear which sites you'll accept, eg only sites with .uk domains or only uk-focused sites etc. I had a quick look and saw nothing on the submission page or the terms or policy page to indicate that. But at the end of the day people will ignore your guidelines and you'll need to be consistent in your editing.

    Good luck :)

Syted, I should point out that I have different types of questions on different days of the week, so the British-specific ones don't always show up. Most days they do, though.

I would stop filtering based on domain. As others have said not all UK sites will have that extension.

Think about how Google treats websites. Neither of my directories are truly country specific. They do predominantly have US-based sites and all must be in English. But the UK, Australia, Japan, Israel, France and a whole host of other countries are also represented through the listings. Both directories show up on a number of the country-specific Google search sites, not just the US-based google.com.

There is nothing on your site that specifically states all websites must be based in the UK or represent a UK-based business.

Had I come upon your site, I most likely would have submitted based upon the information on your site - after all, none of my sites (directory or otherwise) have information that someone in the UK could not use. Some regional directories accept sites that are not nation-specific like mine and some don't.

You're never going to stop all unrelated submissions. I get more unrelated submissions than I do related ones. It's just part of the game when running a niche directory.

I'm probably in the minority but I do review TOS before submitting. When I come across a regional directory that restricts sites based on country of origin, I do not submit.

I'm not sure what you are trying to filter:
    non UK domains
    or
    non UK website owners

Try using IP filtering. Each country has IP ranges. Using this technique you can filter out all non UK visitors trying to submit their websites in your directory.
