If you can select the best keywords at the start the criteria you should use low cpc, high traffic, relevant to your content and high conversion.

You can always refine them once your campaign starts if you use conversion goals.

The best keywords should qualify: First, relavent to your product and service.Second, high frequency of searching.
Therefore, you can serch it online associated with your own website to ascertain the best keywords.

    Relevancy, Relevancy, Relevancy.

Select the most relevant keywords to what you are selling. I would suggest create three Adword Groups, and then make sure you have 10 highly targeted keywords in each, then analyse your result and tweak constantly. That way, you would soon hit the pot of gold of juicy keywords that makes you money.

    Cheers, :)

while your at it .. if you have a site that can't exactly be "Re-written" .. check your content and find out what the strong keywords are within the body of the text in relation to your targeted industry... your density and relevancy are just as big of factors

You will easily have better results if your content is relevant to the keywords you are aiming for.

Google "niche list" and click on the first link. That site will probably help. It gives a lot of keywords you can choose from depending on the category your site is in.

obviously, your budget is going to rule that argument, as not all keywords are created equally
also depends on what the goal and intentions of your web site are

I would have to agree with MS. Are you trying to just generate traffic or sell a product? You need to ask yourself this question before determining what would be your "best" keyword - broad versus longtail. If you are going for a broad keyword, it may not even be best to use Google... May want to stick with Yahoo & Bing for your broad keywords, since they charge so much less.

research, research, research - this is the most important part of any online business! Whatever tool you use (I use two different ones - Google and Wordtracker) you are looking for low competition ie. low cpc, and good volume. Several keywords like this are cheaper and often more effective than one expensive keyword.
