Getting money back from Indian company

I dealt with an indian company in October 2008. They promised me some work completed within 1 month. It was a website creation project.

I paid them 1/3 up front.

3 months after the work was still goin on very slowly. After 6 months it was still not completed and I realised that they couldn't actually do the work.

I asked for the money I paid up front back and they said ok. 6 months later I am still trying to get it back from them. The person I am meant to be dealing with is never in the office and sometimes they don't even answer their phones.

    The company is melhor.co.in

    Does anyone have any advice.

I thought about paying someone in India to go to their offices to get the money back.

    It was around $600.

I did a bank transfer, so paypal dispute is not possible. Plus it was a year ago.

As i know you cannot get the money back due to the time is too long and it's wire transfer,
    actually you can do nothing,
so I strongly suggest to pay someone (yeah Indian again) to their office if possible to get back your money.

I don't think so. There are a lot of good people out there. There are a few that provide low quality services because they can get a lot of money from western buyers.

No there was no contract. It was my first big project and I didn't ask for one. I have since learned.

I think I am going to find someone here on DP who lives near offices to go there. I will ask them to get my money back and add on to that amount an amount for their services. Call it a debt collection charge to the company.

From now on only use escrow from a site like scriptlance. Be weary when using foreigners, it's usually best to pay a few extra dollars and get someone who is located in your country. Also rip off dot com report them.

Just forget them and learn from your mistakes, always use sites such as Odesk, guru.com and other freelance portals to get the job done. You should also make a threads in all webmaster forums about the company and everything that happened.

p/s: I myself got closed to being duped, I've now moved completely to Odesk. Highly recommend it.

    A bit harsh :(

I have a couple guys from India do work for me regularly. I've been scammed as much from people in the US as I have out of country and typically from the ones in the US the amount has been larger.

Unfortunately scammers are a part of doing business on the internet. a little "due Diligence" can lower the frequency of getting scammed, but when it happens it's better to just move on and continue business that to waste your time trying to get back money that you know you never will.

Well, if you did wire transfer then I think you should have got his account number or something like that.

You can complain in your nearby police station using that thing.
And they can trace it that who is the owner of that account.

I can promise you this, you will not find a better deal in the states. But you have to be more patient, you get what you pay for. Americans (which I am proud to be) have a "Right Now" attitude for work, while other countries around the world do not. We just have different cultures and it can be hard to adapt.

I have had this problem before. Try setting small goals and make sure you are encouraging your programmers. No one likes to be ragged on.

Also, try using an escrow service next time. I usually do 100% escrow until project done, I test and then complete payment. But most of my projects are small.

Most important thing is to evaluate the cost vs the cost of not having your software done. If you afford to wait, then stick it out. If you cannot then hire a new programmer and cut your losses.

I realy feel sorry for you, try to make a complain to Indian Chamber of Commerce and report the company as a scammer. It is not a bad ideea reporting to the Police but you need to have a l'bit luck to find the right policeman for the job.Good Luck.
