Well, my son has been asking a lot of questions about how I make money on the net and whether his mom and I will let him start also. Our concerns are the things he will come across and be exposed to if we let him get started.

We would obviously be watching over him, but wondered what your opinions are on it.

It depends on what he is going to be doing product sells or digital stuff like coding?

I've tried the whole selling stuff, and buy from China don't do it China is counterfeit capital of the world. Some ARE legit, but most are not, and I have paid for this...

I think you should let him, I make a good $5 every 30 minutes, and I'm quite young myself.

Depends how you make money online and what field he is into. The number of ways are innumerable.

I'd let him, but always watching over his shoulder. It might be dangerous to let him do everything alone at a certain point for obvious reasons.

Just keep guiding him. Make it sure that he is comfortable asking it from you rather than any online stranger.

I'd say yes but with some sort of blocking software out there. but really if he's 14 he's probably already seen lots of corners of the web.

You could get him started on some PPS stuff that he'd be interested in or a blog or something that would be perfectly harmless. Only drawback I can really see is the social interactions that people get when working their first job(s).

I started my first site when I was 12, let him do whatever he wants, he's 14 he'll already know aboutt hings your trying to hide him from. If he's intelligent he'll make the correct decisions, if not he'll learn from his decisions, what's the worst that can happen.

I think that at 14 it is good that he wants to get involved in making money and learning to make money, at least he isnt hanging around on the streets with his mates getting into trouble.

And also if he starts now at such an impressionable age who knows what he will learn and he could also pick so much up and make alot of money and could become very successful, I know of loads of young people who are making good money on the internet, even some of them are moderators etc and do a very good job.

Just make sure that you keep an eye on what he is doing and keep an eye on his history etc, but obviously not so much that he thinks you dont trust him or this will just put him off.

Good luck to him and good luck to you also, I wish I had started when I was about 13 because I think I would be rich by now if I had.

    Peace

A 14 year old who isn't already hanging out on the Internet? Interesting. Must be another country other than the US because kids here are born with a USB port in there neck.

Teach the child how to make money. You're lucky, mine won't work with me to save her life.

Let him/she do the stuff or let him/she do some site administration to some of your sites. I believe with proper guidance and advice him/she will not cross the border.

Thanks for all of the great input everyone.

He's already very computer savvy so I have no doubt he will do well. I'd like to get him started with what I'm doing (mass submitting articles to Associated Content) because he's a really solid writer, but because of the age limitations my wife and I are leaning towards showing him an "article flipping" method I've used in the past as a starting point.

Any other suggestions regarding a solid starting point for a 14 yr old would be much appreciated.

Thanks again for the input all

Most people say it depends on 'what' he does. I think it's more about 'who' your kid is. Kinda goes without saying at that age kids can be vastly different in personality.

Me I would want to oversee that my kid is doing but not let it become my problem.

When I started I set my first site up at freewebs.com, I edited it once every few days and it taught me html, html is without a doubt the building block of the internet, if he learns that at an early age then he'll be a 'genius' like me in a few years

It also makes learning other languages alot easier!

As long as he will make money through decent way why not?. Anyway most kids right now have part time I guess your son just want to be in his own and make money for himself in a younger you must be happy since he is developing into a being responsible person now

It would be hard to protect from all the bad things of the net that he come across in his attempt to make money online - like do you want him to get into e-whoring as that may be a eye opening and even scaring event depending on his personality type.

How can you monitor eveything the kid does - even like content restriction software can be disabled if he is smart. Are you going to sit there with him on the pc every time........

I would say wait til you at least 16 - make him get a job at mcdonalds or stacking shelves at the local supermarket first. He needs to experience a range of jobs and activites and choose for himself. If you only teach him about making money online - he might become committed to that and miss out alot of other opportunites in the real world. The net can be a very isolating and an anti social medium where people start to reject the real world and get addicted to it - missing out on a lot of life skills important to their developement.

You have a responsibility as parent to make as well educated about as many things as possible - like not everyone is suited to making money online and is not easy as people make out. What sort of person do you want him to grow to be?

If you let him you need to really be honest and be a good mentor and pass alot of what you have learnt so he is better at understanding what he sees online.

Yes by all means. It's great that he is interested in earning money at his age.

Not trying to scare the poster but at 14 making money was the least of my concerns. At 14 kids nowadays have seen pretty much anything the internet has to offer. (NOT condoneing inappropriate material for a minor) but if the kid is savy enough, and you can keep a watchful eye one it. Let him fail if it is to be, however it turns out I say go for it. (again I revert back to it is his problem, not yours)

I guess in short.... Let him make money if he can, if he fails then he will learn from that. If he wants to make money like an adult IMO then you should expect him to act like one.....who knows you might have the next Bill Gates on your hands.....

I'd let him, but make sure that he doesn't drop school because of that... That's my advice
