looking for webhosting that allows pbbg/rpg/mmorpg

Looking for cheap and reliable linux web hosting that allows the setup and administration of browser text based games.

any ideas on good solutions?

How much space and monthly bandwidth you need ?

 

Ok need the following :

linux hosting
php 5
mysql
cron jobs that can run at 5/10 minutes minimum
possibly 5 to 20Gb of disk space
unlimited bandwidth
5 to unlimited sub domains
will need more than 1 mysql database as well

Ooofta, don't those use a lot of CPU/resources? You may get booted from a shared host after your site gets some activity.

 

well I am only just starting out, so will not have alot of players at the start.

also if it does get successful I would probably goto a vps plan.

at the moment vps and dedicated servers are way out of my price range.

 

AHh, definitely go with a company that you can upgrade with. IE, a provider that has VPS's, Dedicated servers as well.

You should be able to get a decent shared plan for about that price. Should not be an issue if your site's starting with low traffic.

basically everything that hostgator had, but without the restriction of not being able to run/host browser based games.

been looking at lots of TOS and AUP's and it is surprising the number of hosts that do not allow rpg/pbbgs

 

As long as you optimize your code and database you should be able to get away with shared hosting.

Bluehost for example don't mention anything about RPGs not being allowed in their ToS. They are also the only shared host that I know of that tells you what the CPU usage restrictions are.

how much cpu usage do these text based scripts use?

say you have 10 to 100 players online at once?

as it is the cpu usage that usually gets you suspended on shared hosting

 

Depends on how well the script is written and how complex it is. I can't give you an estimate.

 

i would highly recommend a vps or semi dedicated hosting.

 

Semidedicated is the same as shared account so I believe you might want to say VPS only
