Would be very easy to get around though with a proxy or other method.

only if the people are smart enough to know about proxys. plus on ajax intensive sites such as digg. proxies will not work

There's also a good amount of VPN's out there that can cut through Ajax, Flash, Java and the like. :D From experence blocking certain IP's if it's a bandwidth dilemma will probably get you some good Adsense or other Ad network revenue as you'll find your former visitors utilizing some sort of remote server to bypass. Considering that most of these virtual IP services are US based most of the clicks got via your ad networks consider the foreign visitors with bypass tools - US based and reward revenue as such, great exploit, should be an ebook written, and you don't here it from me. :D

    Are you blocking US traffic?

This is where most of the Googlebot traffic will come from...

Intruders are smart enough as they mostly used north American proxies and sometimes it become hard to distinguish between genuine users and others based on just IPs.

Right, this would not affect your Google page ranking but would affect your alexa rank. :)

Your website would no longer appear in Google.

Most of Google's spiders and servers are in California USA.
