Hey, im new to websites but have a few questions.

Where is the best place to hire a freelance website designer? are they on this board?

I am currently unemployed so I dont have much money, but what price am I looking at for a website which contains:
    • 10-20 pages
    • several databases
    • flash components
    • also, I might need some basic gif graphic work done, not sure if this is included

Not looking to buy as of yet, however i am interested in a price...any ideas?

Do you mean just the design part? or a coded webpage? Most likely you'll need to find several people for the job.

    1. web designer for designing the website in .psd
    2. flash designer (some web designer knows it as well)
    3. xhtml/css coder to code the design into the pages (I'm a xhtml/css coder)
    4. web developer to code functionalities of the website (since you need database, I assume you'll need php as well)

The charges really depends, the whole thing might cost maybe $200 - $300

The rates that you'll get for that kind of project will vary. I can see many newbies trying to design a site like that for about $200-300. But if you really want something that's worth it you'll end up paying more, unless you get someone from India or somewhere else 3rd world. Just remember that the quality of work might not be there with such a cheap quote. With the design studios that I've worked for you would end up looking somewhere around $1,500 +.

Simply keep in mind that you get what you pay for.... You can get "indians" here on DP in the BST section... Additionally keep in mind certain language barriers if English is your native language as well as the understanding of user interface when it comes to understanding your visitors....

At our company your looking in the £1000's. You need to keep your mind open to the fact that sites do take a long time to complete - especially if done right. So really what you are paying for is the time of a talented designer/developer - and those don't come cheap!

The problem with outsourcing is that people can be VERY unreliable and tend to overstate their qualifications greatly. I don't mean resume padding, but even the basic "I can do X, Y and Z" -- Z being something that they really can't do at all. Plenty of far-east freelancers can code me under the table, but there are a lot who don't add much to the region's reputation.

And I say this as a freelancer; I pick up most of my work from clients who've already been burned once (or MORE!) while trying to save lots of money. It ends up costing them big time in the long-run.

Like Robert K said, there's a large range in terms of cost. Lots of people int he US live in a lower-cost area and that's reflected in their bids. It's not necessarily indicative of their work. Some people also specialize in small businesses and microventures, so they go after small projects intentionally.

Here are my tips to you:

Use oDesk and check qualifications carefully.
    Ask for previous work.
Don't automatically take the lowest bid.

Break up the job into multiple jobs. You might get a great deal on the db work from a great programmer, but who can't design/code sites much at all. Unless it's just a CMS or something (see below).

Be SPECIFIC about what you want, that's the best way to save money IMO. I bid much, much higher for vague job descriptions and frequently get awarded the project. Like now, what sort of databases? Content management systems (etc) like wordpress, phpbb, moodle etc etc? for that, just say content management system. What sort of flash components? Menus or full flash animations?

What kind of flash components? Flash menus and galleries come crazy cheap, especially if you aren't looking for anything too different. The off-the-shelf options there number into the thousands.

FWIW, other than any intense database work, you're probably looking at $300. If your budget is really around $100, look at ThemeForest.net and GraphicRiver.net . Easy, cheap, professional and within your budget.

I saw that you posted the project up on getafreelancer. I'm interested on the outcome of the project and design when biddings complete. Maybe you could post it here so we can look at it and comment on.
