I'd imagine you would have to throw a lot of money into this startup. There will be sales, marketing, and all of that you have to think about.

    Oh hells yea its costly.

First before you even think about how much you are going to pay for bandwidth think about how you are going to get X packet to Y house. You are going to need to be a reseller to an existing cable/phone company unless you have several millions of dollars. You need to basically nagotiate with the phone/cable company for use of their lines. You can simply partition bandwidth on their own backbones or you purchase a big pipe for yourself. Anyone not buying from an established company is going to know a thing or two about latency so peer1/internap bandwidth for speed and if you plan on offering high bandwidth plans cogent or teleglobe. Cogent bandwidth is sub $10/mb but is arguably crap.

-costs for hardware (and lots of it)
    -costs for copper
    -bandwidth
    -datacenter
    -advertising
    -office space
    -coffee machine for office

    the costs are endless.

Alternativly, ISP's are looking at WIFI style setups. Now is a good time to take foot in this market assuming you know anything about it.

Don't forget the competition, I would advice you to have a sizable amount to dish out for advertisements.

If you have some money (some more) try to buy an already "installed" ISP (neighbourhood networks) and continue to expand it. I think that can be a good start.

Just search for the prices of Cisco routers, switches, firewalls. The price of only firewalls go upto 18,000 US$. Theres a lot more you need to cover, as lavaglobe said

    "-costs for copper
    -bandwidth
    -datacenter
    -advertising
    -office space
    -coffee machine for office"

    Plus don't forget the manpower.

If you can afford all this, then I'll be the first person to join your ISP as Technical Expert / Network Engineer :)

That's utterly ridiculous. You can do the same with linux or bsd for next to nothing. I've yet to see any ISP spend that much on a FW, unless they were complete idiots.

hosting is a cut throat business from the start...We offer 1 billion GB for only $1/mo...
now if this is the sort of morals you have, then maybe you will fit in...this business can
turn an honest person with good intentions dirty will quick. very few will pay $20/mo for a good
host when they can spend $1 and get a billion GB, they are not thinking of reality, as one
said before, their website may not even make a year before it is down, so they are thinking
why make the investment on a good host, because if they thought for a second they had a killer
business plan, then surely they would want reliable hosting, if you not one of the big boys, ebay,
google, then chances are good you will never be, and no one will ever find you, its the dream of money that even keeps people going, hoping they will be the next big site...most fail from the very start...

FYI, not sure if this is helpful to the OP, but almost 12 years ago I wrote this little primer on how to be a MAC based ISP. I never completely finished it, but it details the equipment, the process, the telco costs and other headaches, etc. that we dealt with initially way back when. Enjoy: http://mia.net/isp/

only with cisco refurbished equipment from america, will be quite cheap.

only monthly power bill and internet connection will be the problem.

If anyone wanted to start their ISP, CraigsList and State Surplus stores will be their friend.

Best advice, start up where there is a need and go almost all wireless, the cost will be cheaper then running copper or fiber to all except the central location you set up... it will just be expensive in the power department. If you can sell investors on an idea they will go for it.

If you have to ask "How do I start my own ISP?" or even "How do I start a web hosting business?" you should already know you aren't ready to take the first step.

That's like asking "How do I start my own law ferm?" when you are a High School dropout who can't even spell "firm" correctly.
