What's better for a news website, one domain with all news or many domains per topic?

    Hi friends.

A friend of mine wants to launch a set of blogs about celebrities with news gossip and so on.

My question is, what's better in terms of domain power and SEO:

    a. To have ONE DOMAIN where all the news of all celebrities are available and of course users can filter by celebrity, ex: celebritynews.com

    b. ONE DOMAIN per celebrity, ex: bonjovinews.com, u2news.com, etc.

    c. A combination of a and b, meaning that if I go on the main website I get all celebrity news but I can also of course go on the individual celebrity website.

PS: I know the above domains are already taken :)

    Thank you.

I think its better to have one domain for all celebrity. all in one place, so it more convenience for visitor.

    Hi.

    Thank you for the reply.

No, forget usability for a second. If he opts for option three, the one domain for all news would STILL be in place, I'm just wondering if having the additional bonus of separate domains is better in terms of SEO, Google Rank and so on :)

    Hi Steve.

So you believe multiple domains would bring no advantage? I apologise if I insist on pushing the same button but the special and attractive blog will be there as the primary website, all other websites will basically be the same main one but with the content already filtered and maybe different colours and images.

What he is hoping with this domain game is to have multiple websites with a high Google Rank rather than just one.

    Thanks.

One domain is obviously the option you want here. If you try and make one domain per celeb then you will be overextending yourself and creating a "flat" network. Putting it all in one place to start and get the ball rolling is what you should do. Once it gets bigger expand out and start creating the network itself.

But what if the website is just one, on all domains, hence the effort required to start immediately with the network is slim?

Would you still recommend the same?

If you put up the same site on all domains with the same information google will slap you right down to the bottom of the searches because of duplicate content. Just create one great blog/site at the main domain and redirect the others. As you grow expand those separate domains in different directions and effectively create an expanding network.

By same website I meant programmatically. Content-wise, they would all be different of course as for example bonjovinews.com would be showing news about that band, u2news.com would show news on the other band, but as a web application, it's just the same, just retrieving different data from the database.

Would google still penalise me there?

Essentially that would be a good idea and it is what most networks do. Only problem i have with that is it is not wise to construct a tower without a base. Building up one website creates a platform to launch and expand to other websites.

I understand. So your advise is to:

    a. Start with celebnews.com
    b. Make sure ALL other domains are redirecting to celebsnews.com
    c. When he has a solid base of visitors, he starts opening the domains "for public".

    Correct?

    Yes that is correct.

Although instead of "opening the domains for public" i suggest creating a separate website on those domains pertaining to specific information to those celebrities. This way you can create a network as you go. Creating the base is what will make or break the network, having a solid starting point makes it easy to launch new websites that are relevant to the main website.

    Check out:
    http://cheezburger.com/
    http://www.celebuzz.com/

They are networks built out of a main websites.
