I am wanting to transfer one of my sites to a dedicated server, if I do and the server IP address of that site changes, will my google rankings be affected? If so, what kind of impact can I expect and how long will it take for the rankings to recover? (Thanks).
Hi No, this shouldnt make any difference to your site as long as the urls stay the same. If you where to rename urls, then this would have a big impact.
make sure the down time for transferring the site is mimimal. google doesnt like websites that don't work.
Most likely it will, if its faster and smoother server, your traffic shall improve and if its a slower and weaker server then you can guess!
If any site which is ebing penalized already is hosted on same IP then you shouldn't host with that site.
That is totally wrong, hosters such as hostgator, dreamhost etc have 100s of websites hosted on same ips and if we go by your statement then if one of those sites get penalised, all of the sites hosted on that ip would get the penalty, which is not true.
I would be further interested in facts about this toppic. As far as i know, thats the problem with shared hosting, that you can be penalised for using the same ip.
Well, i am telling from personal experience. Beside that, simply apply your logic, it is not like drop of a piss which makes the whole pond dirty! It would be an injustice to all other sites hosted on same ip and google algo is smart enough to find the difference.
Do you have any experience with using different c-class ips for linkbuilding and pagerank? Does it really make a difference for google if you link from different domains with the same ip or with different c-class ips?
That is a totally different thing. If you are talking about sidewide links then i don't appreciate of them if they are in excess and are used to manipulate serps or PR regardless of same ip/c class ips or different ips. I have a really bad experience with sitewide links so i know what iam talking about. Big sites do link to their own sites such as ign.com gamespot.com etc but they have huge trust factor built up and have a lot of unique and interesting content which makes up for them, but for users like us i would not recommend doing excessive linking with in our own sites. This is a huge topic and hard to summarize every thing in few words.
So for smaller sites you would recommend to place only 1 link on 1 site (NO footer/sidewide links)??? Im asking because i often place a link in navigation bar or footer.
It's false. Your site won't be penalized for simply being on the same host or having a similar IP address. This idea stems from 8-9 years ago when shared hosting and Google were both in their infancy. SPAMmers would often set up dozens of sites on the same server, and at the time Google's primary defense against such large-scale SPAM was to ban entire Class C blocks of IP addresses. Google no longer uses such blunt force tools.
It wont help in anyway to boost PR, Although if u switch to powerfull server it may be boon for ur readers
