Ranking for short tail, but not long tail -bizarre!

    Afternoon chaps,

For some peculiar reason, I can get my site ranking for short, competitive terms (which is awesome), but it's a really hard slog for less competitive terms with less traffic. Typically, these are longtail terms.

I suppose it's a nice problem to have. But I want ALL the terms, especially when some of the lower traffic terms are high conversion.

    For example:
North Face boots (I'm 3rd in UK)
North Face walking boots (I'm 9th in UK)

Both pages have equal amounts of link building for equally competitive terms.

    10th on my search - google.co.uk

btw i would edit your post and stick some # in your keyword or you may find this post out ranks your site.

have you used the long tail term as your anchor the same amount of times as your short tail anchor?

maybe do some additional link building, but instead of the full long tail term, split the anchor but always use the term walking in it. since its the term walking thats causing the imbalance

lol. Why would this forum post outrank my site?
It's not that Relevant or that Strong in the niche.

Yes, I should split the anchor text. I just thought it was bizarre that ranking for short tail seems to be easy while long tail is hard. -It's supposed to be the other way around...according to Google.

it is true if you have your site structure correct, you have the ranking strength obviously, you need to channel it around the site better.

depends on the query, and if you'd put the kws in the post title it almost certainly would show up on the page.

ps you can only edit the post for a small amount of time afterwards ;)

It might be because the long tail keywords has more competition.
