You can bid on the keyword without any problems. However, many large companies won't allow you to have their brands in the ad itself. Nike is very likely one of those. A pain, I know. How to mention your sell Nike shoes when you can't say it in the ad?

One way around it is to have it in your display URL. For some reason, Google doesn't object to that. Therefore, the following are legal (for now):

    www.mysite.com/Nike
    nike.mysite.com

They'll have the word trademarked, so if you have it in your ad, Google will automatically flag it and your ad won't be approved.

There's some of my competitor companies who do it, so like mentioned above, I add it to the display URL now and then and sometimes the only way around it is by misspelling the name.
Example: For Nike, you could try Niike. It doesn't always look good though, unless it's a word that's often misspelled, such as Walmart (wall-mart, wal-mart etc). You get the idea.

If they found you are using their brand for your advertisement, they will very probably tell google your infringement.
Then google will not approve this advertisement and ask you to modify it.

Google won't allow you to use Trademark or Brand names in the ads.

You can bid on the keywords but not use them in the actual ads.

Additionally affiliate networks won't allow you to use those type of terms and if you do they will ban your account.
