Where is a good place to find a reliable server administrator. The one that I'm hiring right now is not good enough, and is too slow to solve problems. I found him at webhostingtalk. Do you know of any other place where you can find someone who really knows his stuff?
Your best bet, depending on your budget, might be to go with a VPS and pay extra for the "managed" service where many have a one-hour response time guarantee - I've gone this route on a few busier, more active sites where downtime and other issues are mission-critical and it's been well worth the expense.
Any particular reason you don't want to switch hosts? I was very reluctant to do this merely for the fear of messing something up and the sheer size of the site(s) ... the new host did the move for me - very quick, painless and worry-free; and cost-free
I've being with a lot of hosts through the years and this is the best one so far. Also the site does not have a usual setup. It is hosted in 2 servers one for the site and the other for the database and I'm not sure but I think most hosts wouldn't offer the level of management that I need.
Okay, I see your delima a bit better then. Have you asked your current host if they offer a managed service or maybe they could make recommendations for a referral to find a reputable service provider?
They say they dont offer that kind of support. They recommended me a company but they are expensive and I want something cheaper lol
I just ordered my first dedicated host. I'm going to use an external server management company to manage mine. I can't be bothered spending the hours / days on setting it up. These guys I found only charge $30 or so a month per server for apparently, unlimited service requests. It works out cheaper than a full managed host
PlatinumServerManagement.com Mind you, I haven't used them yet (I'm still waiting for my order for my Server to be processed) but they seem to be widely recommended on WebHostingTalk.com... although I find the WHT forum a bit biased. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a lot of paid posters bumping up certain companies.
Hey I finally signed up with PSM. It took them slightly more than 24 hours to open my account (and only after I emailed them to 'remind' them). Within that 24 hours, I've already figured out how to configure my nameservers, WHM, cpanel, and fantastico. Not a good start for PSM but I won't make any judgements about them just yet. I've put in my first support ticket to 'harden' the server so we'll see how that goes Now that I'm a customer, I've also got a referral link aswell: http://www.PlatinumServerManagement.com/affiliate.cgi?5780404400 hehehe
The people that I choose at wht were also very recommended. Now that you mention it, it could be as well that the recomendations were all fake , done by paid posters because their service wasn't even near of what I read on the thread.
Paid posting to induce a misleading impression of a product / service should be made illegal! Anyway, my server has been setup now. I must say, I am satisfied with the experience. I've already submitted 4 tickets (each with a few extra requests on top of the original ticket), and each has been responded to within about 6 hours but mostly within 2 hours. There's some talk about them not being very knowledgeable. Apparently, they have 8 people working there. I would say, like most companies, a small percentage of these 8 would be the 'experts' and to keep costs down, they would be supported by the beginners who handle the easy stuff. In any case, for $29 a month and unlimited support tickets, that's a great bang for your buck. Now that the server has been set up, I could just aswell cancel my account, ask for the 30 day refund, and support the servers myself now. But for $29, I definitely feel they've earned their keep.
