I've gotten around 200 followers and have made approx ~$40 off of them, in the matter of two months. Basically just spam the Trending Topics every few days, I guess I just get more hits then others.

Direct sales on Twitter don' work anymore. As stated by others here, everyone trying to sell stuf to everyone else who don't want to buy anything is like a gerbil on a spin wheel. Tweeple like stories, news, curiosity, photos, videos and controversy. Tweet and try to link to things like that. 90% of people on Twitter aren't holding out their credit cards waiting for an ebook to buy. But they WILL buy something they can't easily find on Google with a few keystrokes.

If you can built friends that are interested in the same niche, that might bring you results.

Many of us use twitter this way - they follow a lot of people. Then, if people follow back, they also follow back. If people do not follow, they stop following. This way we collect a lot of spam twitter who are not really the kind of persons you want to follow you. The end result is you have a very small list of real followers.

I've been saying this for months. Twitter is so saturated now with sales pitches that people are just numb to it, kind of like adsense ads.
The best that you can do if you are not a well known company is to draw people to something that interests them, like a well written or niche blog, and hope that it will increase visits and therefore increase any ad or affiliate clicks...but direct selling on Twitter is dead.

The only opportunity I see, is selling noobs looking for shortcuts "How to get thousands of Twitter followers" schemes. Other than that, I just don't see it.

Just because Twitter is popular, doesn't mean that somehow it miraculously changed the whole structure of consumer behavior and the stages of buying that have driven ecommerce since day one. It didn't.

People are not buying much in this recession anyways. Would you buy right now some product that I tweeted? Probably not. People spend money more wisely now and will not just buy anything that you put in front of them. You will have a very hard time selling it to them. The only way you could succeed is if you told them and made them believe that you have the answer to making tons of money online but even that has been used too many times. :)

Most people think that all you have to do is signup for a twitter account and put up your url and get thousands of followers and you will make tons of money. Well that is not the case.

Like anything else with twitter you need to build relationships with people and the more you do the more people are willing to refer or help you out.

If you are there just to spam your website you are just wasting your time. If you want to learn from the people who are successful with twitter you will succeed.

Anyone who is actually making money on twitter, are you using any of the automated friend adders?

The automated friend adders are NOT going to get you money in the bank.
Please read all the advice here from people who have tried and failed.
There are really smart marketing people here and "out there" in the world that have told me the same thing I figured out- it isn't worth the time and effort.
Even targeted followers aren't going to click on a shortened URL and flip the credit card on the table. That's how identities get stolen and bank accounts sucked dry.....

my twitter campaign has been moderately successful. i have received a lot of additional traffic but whether it will pay off financially has yet to be seen. i am trying to build my account up slowly with actual relationships as nobody likes people who just constantly fill their page with spam links.

Twitter works for me very well. Also I have found that twitter visitors are very loyal and often click on your blog/site. Its my own view.

I would suggest not putting any advertising link unless you have at least 5000 followers

I just started trying to use twitter to promote my blog. I do get a few hits from twitter when I post my blog(s) link. But, I have to agree that the majority of my followers are just others trying to promote their business. I only have 250 followers and climbing everyday, but its really just spammers mainly. I was doing the same thing, but since then have dropped my tweets down to about 10 a day if Im lucky.

If you have a way to get targeted followers then thats great, you should share your method. Because I use icerocket to find people who are searching for what I have to offer, then start following them. My send a @twiterusername message to them sometimes. But, I really try hard not to over do and be marked as spam.

Maybe there is no way to get targeted followers. But, I have learned that if you do spam twitter then you will find that you will lose followers.

    Well that is my take.

Yep, I use twitter for every post I make through my site:

    http://nestr.com

Why? Not sure. but it seems like a good idea. I am getting a lot of spam follows. My site is not about spam it is more of a current event posting system.

I get aprox. 5% linkbacks to my site via twitter searches. Is this good? I have no idea.

I agree to use Twitter as a marketing tool sucessfully you need to think of it as building a relationship first, getting to know people and providing value before you consider trying to sell anything.

This is true. Building a relationship is great. But, at the same time I hear all the time about people having over 1000 followers. How many of these followers are actually are people interested in your product. I have 260 followers and I bet at least 200 of those are other members just advertising there product(s)

Ya, many people only consider twitter as marketing tool as the final purpose. However, most of people are bored about it. Firstly, try to share some valuable contents and give them a hand if they need help.

Yes twitter is a very good place for generating traffic but now days there are too many spammers at twitter therefore I started preferring eZdia which is another site helps you to generate good traffic through social networking and bookmarking . You will like to have a look at eZdia , if not done yet
