Will ebooks ever replace books?

I was just wondering who prefers ebooks to books? I am really looking to buy a ebook reader, maybe a sony one or the new kindle.

I know ebooks are good for business (there are so many marketing ebooks out there lol as they can be downloaded easily and have almost no start up costs).

But can they be used for general purposes like causal reading and will ebooks replace books?

Don't think so. I still love to sit back and relax while reading a book. And there are plenty of people who prefer to hold a physical item and not have light shining in their eyes like ebooks do.

Business ebooks have their own appeal because you can work, research and learn while reading your ebook.

I like your point about business ebooks being so assessable. You can create your own ebook in days and potentially everyone on the internet could read it. Now that's something a book could never do without shipping costs and trips to the shops

...ebooks could be the future of reading...

I think they should make textbooks in ebook form. Easier to research and compile notes from.

I don't think so either. Especially not in school. I think schools will always rely on standard text books.

I don't think so, I think that people enjoy owning books and reading from a book rather then reading from a computer screen. You can't get as comfortable when your reading on the computer or from a palm item.

Amazon Kindle is one of the things making ebooks closer to ink and paper. They are trying to make ebooks into books sort of, but going green same time.

    I totally agree,

It's so much easier to get the product produced and available to the masses that they will only continue to grow

Personally, I love reading e-books primarily because they are so much cheaper than printed books. I can even download them for free.

Digital formating is unreliable and will never replace a hard copy. Its just too easy to erase digital info. Someone at a powerplant farts and blows up the internet then the world will revert back to the 80's and people will be going back to the smelly old library again.

    Smelly old library? ;)

The library here is far from smelly (unless you count the aroma of complimentary Starbucks coffee). It's my home away from home. The guys that sell ebooks don't greet me by name... the librarian does.

There's a tactile appeal to books. You can toss one in a bag and go, even scribble notes in the margins if you own it. I have tons (literally I suspect, there are a few subjects where mine rival the library for selection). Much as I like the ability to do a search & find when on a screen, I don't see ebooks replacing the cozyness of curling up with a decent book.

I still prefer the books over eBook cause I can't stand reading on the screen. Unlike on books, i can lay down to bed while reading or anywhere

I love books - can't imagine not having them around, but it seems like there's so much choice in e-books. I purchased an e-book today and it just wasn't available as a book at all - it was e-book or nothing.

No. Just as the newspaper and radio, respectively goes hand in hand with TV, so will paper books and e-books.
It is a great joy to read paper books in the reading room or beside the lake. Ebooks are much more convenient to carry than paper books, especially when the file is very big. However, I do like the feeling to read traditional books, turn over one page to the next one, gaining a sense of accomplishment as the left pages decreases.
