Hi! My website is 4 months old and last week I achieved position number 9 (first page) on google.com for my targeted keyword, however I am only getting 30-40 visitors per day. My keyword's monthly search volume is: 165,000 (google), 66,500 (Overture). Why is this happening, is this normal? Why despite my good rankings traffic is so low? Have anyone had this experience before?
1. good job on the rankings. 2. #9 is not supposed to bring you a whole lot of traffic. By the time they get to that spot, the visitors either found what they were looking for, either click to go to page 2. So you should try harder and rank higher. 3. that monthly search volume is not that accurate, and even if it was, it only means what people were searching for and not what they are/will be searching for. So if you chose a seasonal niche, maybe that's why you're not getting the expected results. 4. did you check with google.com, or your local version?
That monthly search volume you get from google is not that accurate. So even though you get the rankings you do not get the traffic.
It depends what keyword it is. You would be top for "Big blue beach balls", but that won't get you much traffic. Pos 9 might not be high enough. Think about how many times you click down to number 9 when you search something. I usually click 1-5 and by then I usually find what I am looking for.
This brings back the old '11 is better than 7' arguments from a couple of years ago. But do remember: you ARE on the first page, and you ARE in the top ten. Sure, build on that but don't make any big and sudden changes. There's plenty of folks around here with much older sites that would love that number nine, myself included. John
How's your description tag? Make sure you have a real good reason for people to click on your #9 position. Some say that position #10 gets more clicks than position #9, but I agree with the previous comment that says you should try to climb up higher if you can. Have you plugged the domains that are above you into Yahoo site explorer to see what their backlink counts are? You might be able to climb up a few spots by just getting a few PR links or an .edu link - do you know any college students that can give you a link? I have also found that the keyword counts are really inacurate - partly due to the fact that if the keyword is in a competitive niche, there may be thousands of affiliates running a search on that keyword to check out their competition or their own organic positioning. Studies have shown that position #1 Organic gets about 56% of the clicks, and positon 9 gets more like 1.5% of the clicks which would look like this: 165,000 clicks per month divided by 30 days per month = 5,500 clicks per day X 1.5% (percentage that position 9 should get) = 82 clicks per day. I would definitely do some testing on your description tag and check out the "nosnippet" tag just to make sure Google is not displaying a different piece of your page text based on the search term. You might be able to increase your traffic just by testing that page description tag. Hope this helps!
The monthly traffic that Google shows is not exact traffic and secondly the position you got is good but not that much good that can drive most of the part of traffic to your website. work hard to get under 5 and then you can get around 30 to 40% of exact traffic on that keyword.
Have a look at what is displayed in the SERP for the other people, are you providing a compelling reason to click your listing compared to the others? Also as the others have said, 9th place isn't really going to get you that many clicks, you need to be above the fold really, most users will scan the results they can see, they will only scroll down if they can't find what they are looking for on the listings which are immediately visible.
Also the searches I think is only approximate number of times it is searched, and not all searchers click the results. If you could rank on many other variations, that will be better for you.
try to identify how many keywords are on first page and how many keywords are first 5 page and so on, based on this research u know your keyword position, try to get all them in first page and always focus on 500 + keyword to rank for seo, it will help to generate traffic
Are you sure? I think that these volumes are not correct or at least they are not actual. 9th placement should bring you a good traffic if your keyword search volume is more than 200k in total. Please check the first 8 placements' Alexa rankings and post them here. So, all we can be sure on the accuracy of your search volume info above.
#9 doesn't bring in a lot of traffic, I experienced the same last year. And maybe you're not #9 in all Google countries. Use this tool to check your ranking in more countries http://www.allno1.com/google_serp/multi_country_rank_checker.asp Good luck!
Unless we know your keyword, it becomes difficult for us to speculate further than just that fact that you're bottom of page 1, so unless more information is divulged to us, we can only go as far to say that being bottom of the first page, you're less likely to obtain the visitors in comparison to te top 4 or 5 sites. However, congratulations on the SERP.
Your best explanation why you don't get that much of traffic is to check search share (explained in heatmap) how visitors act when they perform a search. More info you can get on SERPs & Information Scent. Hope this explains your question. Cheers, Astrit
Definately get higher position if you want to increase traffic. #9 is great but as many have said here already... 'above the fold' is where you need to be (in other words you are seen at the top of the results without scrolling). Typically depending on different screen res this will be position 3 to 5. So work on getting your site into the critical top half of the page - the traffic will increase. You should also ask yourself though is it traffic or conversion you want? I have actually found position 3 or 4 can achieve higher conversion than searches where appear at #1. Sure you get more traffic at #1 but depending on your offering, and if people want to compare, they will often then check the other sites in the results and commit after checking 2 or 3 options. Joe
