I would recommend you to try forum commenting because it will be a big help when it comes to gaining more backlinks. Just choose those forums that allow dofollow signatures and just the famous ones.

I have seen a lot of websites that helped them ranked well in search engines because of this, that is why is believe that it's also an effective SEO strategy.
