Keyword Phrase Research is a process of selecting the most "optimum performance" keyword phrases that can help visitors find your site.

    Keyword Research Process
Keyword Research process involves the following important steps. These steps can be described as:

    1. The Discovering phase should focus on identifying as many keywords as possible that are related to your website and target audience.

    2. The Analysis phase involves adding information about existing competition; PageRank based limitations and potential for ranking.

    3. The Selection process involves objective measurement based shortlisting of keywords keeping the site focus and target audience within the limitations analyzed.

    4. The Deploying phase is about making optimum use of your selected keywords on your website copy, HTML code and tags.

    Hello,

A very powerful and free tool to select your search keyword is Google Keyword Tool.
It gives you an insight on the queries being done on Google following your ones and also gives you suggestions on related one.
One more nice feature about it is the rank of keywords based on many criteria like the competitiveness of the keyword. Very important to know with how much people are you competing for those terms and also how much will it cost you to buy those keywords using adword.

    To your success!

Actually if the site is new you have to target long tail while your are targeting competitive keywords because long tail is easy to rank and it can give you traffic.

Long tail keywords are still useful these days. In some cases, because of using long tail keywords, keywords itself help each other in SERPs.

Better have longer and more targeted keyword then just general ones. That would be easy to reach the top and that will drive more targeted traffic to you

No they dont use meta keyword tags but they all use the description tag.
Just basically litter your site with the keywords, 3-4%, put it in h1 and h2 tag and in a link.

    - Run a short test on adwords for hundreds of [exact match phrases]
    - This will tell you search volume per keyword
    - Check out how competive the keywords are in the search results by searching for them on Google "like this"
    - Check out the page rank, link volume/quality of those on page 1

Based on these 3 metrics you can work out which keywords you are realistically going to get page 1 for (assuming you SEO well) and which ones will produce decent traffic volume.

Obviously the best keywords will be the ones with high search volume and are uncompetitve.

    Long Tail Keywords
Long tail keywords are keyword phrases composed of three or more words that collectively are more specific than a single keyword. Long tail keywords are more likely to convert to sales than shorter, more generic keywords because there is less competition for them. Generally, the more specific the search, the closer the searcher is to the act of purchasing a product or service.

In that way, you can easily ranked in Google SERPs. Using Long tail keywords, are still effective. You can also use this in Classified postings.
