Could Apple Beat Google If They Developed A Powerful Search Engine?

Google rocks! We all know it, there is no questioning the fact that they are always on the leading edge of search technology. But what if..... Apple decided to enter the market.. (I doubt they ever will).. But I would guess that apple would have a lot of resources and tools that could help it have a very successful platform.

I can visualize it now.. A clean, simple, white-ish gray background, with a search box, and the apple symbol in replace of the typical "Search" button.

    Thoughts?

I'd say Apple has a better chance than Microsoft, but still... no.

Apple could try, but they would end up being bailed out by Microsoft... again.

thats a really interesting question. while i don't think they could beat google, i think they have enough talent in their company to develop a really great search engine and gain some market share.

Ironically, the $150M "investment" they made in 1997 was probably one of the best business decisions they made. :) Apple stock was $5.80/share back then (split adjusted).

If they had kept the stock today, that $150M stock investment would have been worth $4.45B today.

Similarly, if you invested $150M into Microsoft stock at the same time, it would be worth $225M today.

Apple would probably not beat Google. Microsoft have attempted this for years and have far greater financial resources.

Maybe a harder question to call would be 'If Google were to launch a laptop would it beat the Apple Mac?'

i don't think apple would have a chance or even try too. Google has 10 years of search data that the use to improve their search engine algorithm while apple would have to start off with nothing. Apple is more focused physical products and doesn't have the huge amount of profit google does.

Apple specializes in developing software specifically for one type of hardware and exclusive contracts. I suspect that their search engine would have a lot of limitations, so it would not have a big following.

Look is not everything. Over the time Google had chances to clarify their algorithm make it better. Even if Apple have a good start, it would years they would be able to get significant share of the market.

Microsoft has a ton of resources also and look where they are. Their homepage for bing has this image that changes daily explaining something no one really cares about or uses. Although their video and image search is top notche i can't say the same for their text searches. Apple would have to do what microsoft did to video/image searching to normal text searching to be able to beat google.

Someone's going to have to put a unique spin on search engines before we see the next big contender I think.

I would have to agree that mac users would probably be the only ones to use it. I dont think even microsofts bing will be able to beat google.

im thinking now of search engine touch. you can flip, touch, scroll with your finger tips. the problem is, if apple do that, we need to pay. unlike google, its all free.

I think an Apple run search engine would end up working more like a directory than a search engine as Google has it defined.

I couldn't see Apple having any sort of discovery crawlers. Maybe a few "The Matrix" style sentinel crawlers to keep an eye on everyone who went through the approval process and paid the listing fee to get into the index to begin with.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple found a way to charge both the site owner and person searching every time a listing was clicked, completely eliminating 3rd party advertisers from their system. Well, actually maybe that would be 4th party, not sure.

If Microsoft can't beat Google. There's no greater chance for Mac Apple to beat Google..
What do you think of my idea?
