I know that PageRank should be a general indication of a pages "value" and is used to determine it's placement, in part, within Google's SERPs, but I have a PR 0 page that is out-performing a PR 4 page in the SERPs. Is that due: to the gleaning some value from a higher ranked home page--even though the internal link structure is clearly not passing enough juice for the page to gain significant PR (it is 0). The age of the site Significant links to the site in general that overcome the lack of link juice to an individual page Any ideas?
well you can't compare these two.. they both are dependable on each other.... the most important is backlinks..
I guess you asked why did your pr0 out-performs a pr4, Well, this is because, Google takes a lot of factors while deciding the placement in SERPs. 1. If your pr0 has some keywords and a pr10 does not have them, your site outperforms it - obvious 2. If your pr0 site has keywords in title and the pr10 site has only in body your site outperforms - 90% of times 3. If your pr0 has best keyword density with great content it out performs a pr10 with bad density and content - mostly 4. If a pr9 site copies from pr10, your pr0 will outperforms pr9, as pr9 would be filtered off - 80% of times
SERP means a search engine results page and cannot be checked like PageRank, the thread starter had started the thread like that to compare some related issue not that SERP is a new rank like PageRank.
PR is just one factor of 200, which Google consider while ranking a site/page in SERPs. I have seen so many situations where low PR pages are outranking high PR pages. If You are looking to increase your site's PR, then get backlinks from pages that themselves have high PR. This will help to increase your site PR.
Well, in a way, you can compare them. "Actual Google PR", the one only Google knows, has a big effect on a sites position in the SERP's - while toolbar PR is only an indication of what Google wants toolbar users to see about a given webpage - and uless you sell ads to toolbar PR hungry webmasters, it's useless. I know this because my 8+ year old site droped toolbar PR from a 6 to a 3 because I sell sponsorships (NOT PR), yet my positions in the SERP's grew dramatically over the years - even after being "slapped on the wrist".
People place far too much emphasis on Site PR. Also another question you should be asking is are your keywords for which you are ranking well of value? I could make a site tomorrow rank #1 for "ziggy stadomi pop shoot challenge" but so what?
Is your PR0 page outranking the PR4 page for exactly the same keyword term? It could be several things: You might have more incoming links with the anchor text of the keyword phrase on the PR0 page when compared to the PR4 page Your titles might include the keyword phrase on the PR0 page and not on the PR4 page The keyword phrase is in the content of the PR0 page and not on the PR4 page. Don't worry too much about the Toolbar PageRank. There is a whole ecosystem built around the Toolbar Pagerank from selling links to directory submissions. Unless your website is based around selling links then I wouldn't worry about it too much. This is something that gets constantly overlooked. Even if you rank number 1 for a keyword that gets lots of traffic, what impact does it have on actually making money? Ranking for a keyword (even keywords with high search volumes) isn't going to make you money. It's far better when targeting keywords to focus on the user's intent. Do you want traffic or do you want a user to visit your site when they are likely to buy something?
Well, PR of a website is certainly a benefit and if you have good PR for your website, you will definitely get a benefit in the SERP of your website. However, if you have good PR for your website, it doesn't mean that you will get good rankings for your website even if you do not work for SERP of your website. It is important to optimize your website for keywords related to your niche so that your website gets good SERP. Hence, it is important to optimize your website for PR as well as SERP so that your website gets good SERP with good PR as both of them are important.
The PR and the SERP depends on each other... its a vice versa topic to be discussed.. They're both necessary and they play great role in dealing with Site success.
Can anyone point to definitive discussions of this relationship - outside the typical Google community guidelines? I love all the docs Google provides to webmasters, etc. - but I often want an outsider's opinion on topics like this.
Ranking is more important than PR. Page rank is just one of the factors to get high rankings on SERP.
