So im relatively new to SEO, just started doing it a couple months back and am thinking of putting out a weight loss type website but it seems like there's tons already out there. Do you think I should try something a bit easier or just go for it and see what happens?
Generally, I would say yes. Ultimateily, I don't even consider weight loss a niche anymore, it is a sub-category of "health". I consider niche's to be the 3rd level. So for example: Babies -> Baby Clothing -> Baby Hats Health -> Weight Loss -> Alli Weight Loss Pills (this wouldn't be a good one though, still too crowded) Kitchen -> Cooking Products -> Pots and Pans The last ones are niche's, the second ones are subcategories. Hopefully this helps you get further into a niche where you might be able to compete. Keep in mind, the ones above aren't necessarily good ones, they are just examples for what a niche is.
If you want to try and optimize your page for "weight loss" then its going to be very hard. There are a lot of long tail keywords out there which are getting searched a lot of times with less competition. You may want to target them to make some easy money. Eg. How to lose X pounds in X days? What is the best way to lose weight?
Yes, optimizing for long tail keywords will get you farther. Would generic weight-loss be the subject? If so, you could try targeting a certain demographic. For example, it could be a site focused on weight loss for teenage males or weight loss for stay-at-home moms.
I wasn't going for "weight loss" exactly as a keyword i just usually leave things generic i guess im paranoid that sum1 will see it and do the same thing. The keywords im looking at still look pretty tough though, for intitle:"keyword" on google I get around 84 000, that seems pretty steep.
No, the weight loss niche isn't overly competitive. That's just hype built to scare people like you away Yes, it's a competitive niche, but it's also a huge niche. Which means there are dozens of thousands of long-tails which you CAN dominate. And by the time you take those one, your site/blog will be powerful enough to start taking down tougher keywords.
Thanks for the advice Just curious for the tougher keywords how much of an advantage would it be really if my domain was the keyword over sites that don't have it in the domain?
84,000 isn't too competitive. If you found something that low in the weight loss industry and there are enough searches on that keyword per month, you might be on to something.
It's an advantage, but by far, the biggest indicator are the backlink quality/quantity. And of that, the backlink quality is a thousand times more important than the backlink quantity.
it is extremely competitive if you just target "weight loss" or "diet pills." however, you can do some good keyword research and find some long tail keywords that are low competitive. for example, diabetes weight loss plan or weight loss diet plan, you get the idea
Lol. So what doesn't have too much garbage? MMO? Dating? Any bigger niche has garbage on it. Doesn't mean we're going to start promoting sock puppets.
Yeah, it's true, but it's a never-ending money maker. I sell to my fat loss lists over, and over again. I think about half of my current income has EVER come from fat loss niche.
simply weight loss, weight loss advice, instant weight loss and walking and weight loss are some good keywords. you can build pages around them. These are medium searched keywords without much competition.
