Assuming that you have original, unique content: email people who have sites related to your content, and ask them to link to your site/page. Do *not* just exchange links with anybody, regardless of their content. If it's not related to your content, odds are that the link is worse than useless, and can actually *hurt* your ranking.

Each day, I do the following...

I post on both new forums, and forums that I previously posted on. Approx 5-10 posts, at least.
I post make comments on 5-10 blogposts on various related blogs.
I manually submit a unique article to an article directory
I bookmark at least one article in my blog on 5-10 social bookmarking sites per day.

Once per week I do the following...
I send out a newsletter to my opt in subscribers
I submit my RSS to at least 1 RSS feed directory
I buy an affordable, text link ad, or blogpost from an authoritative, related site with strong PR.

Now that's just plain silly. Just write the content, and people will just automagically flood your site, huh?

That's not the way it works. Traffic doesn't just automatically appear, no matter how good your content is.

There's 3 ways to get traffic to your site.

1.) You pay for it. If you have the budget, you can have the traffic. From the very first day you open, as much traffic as you can pay for. The more targetted it is, the more you have to pay. But if you've got the bankroll, the sky's the limit.

2.) You work for it. By that, I don't mean that you put in a few hours of work, and then forget about it. I mean you put in dozens, or even hundreds of hours of work, then you put in a few hours per day for a few years.

3.) A combination of both. You buy a few text link ads and a few blogposts to get you started, then you put in a couple hours a day building quality links. After a couple of months you've got good traffic.

You have a promote your site in different ways...advertise! Create unique content, offer something of "value", have users "interact" with the site...Aside from that quality directory submissions would get you some "web credibility" and improve your ranking too. There are many ways to create backlinks...some actually do count as backlinks...some don't from the point of view of the big G !

It depends on whether you have more time or more money. But regardless which one, I would find high PR sites and get one way links. Search a little, they are out there or buy some links.
