I think it is all about the resources. To some degree, the competition on line is the competition of resources. If u can provide what others can't, then U have better chance to win. Google can provide huge rsources while other SEs can't. Btw, google is changing and imporving all the time, it is also important for it to stand top!

I do not think the quality of the google results is best, there are way better search algorithms already, but none of them is as big as google so nobody can offer search results as fast as google does it and that is the main reason why I use google also I know about their privacy policy.
May be because Google show very relevant results and on Google Homepage, there is just a search box and nothing else unlike Yahoo which is a complete portal.
