Which is the actual way to target for keywords. Many SEO companies ask to give at least 5-10 keywords by which we want to rank our site in google.

Do we need to put the keywords which we are targeting for, in the title or in meta tags ? Or we should include those keywords in the content.

Before even picking a keyword phrase to target, I would suggest doing some serious research. Look for keyword phrases that get at least a moderate amount of monthly searches AND that have low competition. These will be the easiest to rank for with the highest amount of traffic in return. Of course, you will likely want them to be phrases that you think people looking for your product or whatever might be searching for.

Once you pick the keyword phrase(s) to target... Then yes... use the targeted phrase(s) as the <title> (<title>Primary Phrase</title> if targetting one phrase or <title>Primary Phrase - Secondary Phrase - Tertiary Phrase</title> if targetting multiple).

Then use the targeted phrase(s) or slight variations (so that it appears more natural) in the <h1>, multiple <h2>s, and in the content.

When other pages on your site link to this page, have them use the targeted keyword phrase(s) from the <title> of this page (and sometimes slight variations) as the link text.

When you "plant" links on other pages on OTHER sites in your link building (like article submissions, blog commenting, forum sigs, etc.), have them use the targeted keyword phrase(s) from the <title> of this page (and sometimes slight variations) as the link text.

This pretty much it at 50,000 ft.

But most of the competitors i found use commas(,) in title instead of hyphen( - ).

    What about meta tags ?

    Yes.. meta tags is important..

The Meta Description Tag – Meta Description tag gives Google and other search engines a summary of what the page is about.

The Keywords Meta Tag - The Meta keywords tag is one of several of Meta tags that you can insert into your web pages to provide search engines with information about your pages that isn’t visible on the page itself.

Try to find sites in your niche, and check their meta tags, then you will know how to make yours.

The search engines will normalize your <title> before evaluating. They will basically remove all punctuation and special characters before looking for keywords in the <title>. I prefer hyphen. But it shouldn't matter if you want to use a ',' or '|'.

As far as HTML <meta> elements are concerned, they generally have NO influence on your rankings. They don't affect your rankings at Google. Some of the non-sophisticated search engines that you've probably never even heard of may use the description and/or keywords <meta> elements as ranking factors, but the major engines generally ignore them because of their abuse in the past.

The <meta> description IS important however since Google will often show it as the snippet in the SERPs. Having a good <meta> description with a call to action can increase your click-thru-rate in the SERPs. But at Google it does NOT effect how your URL ranks.

The <meta> keywords element is pretty much worthless. It's ignored by pretty much every reputable search engine on the planet. If a search engine is using it, it's probably not an engine you care about. I still include it but only for "completeness" sake.
