Well, I did something rather rare and completely unusual yesterday afternoon. I took the day off at shortly before 4PM CST and went to see "World Trade Center". I normally do not have time to watch movies in the theater so I consider the rare opportunity a real treat. I have to say that I was a bit apprehentious going in. I had no idea what to expect. I knew little about the story. Well, I knew about 9/11 as I lived it, however I knew nothing about the story directory Oliver Stone chose to portray. Without giving too much away, I have to say that this is probably the best portrayal of a true story I have ever seen. Usually when a tragic event is portrayed by Hollywood it comes off like some B-Grade made for TV movie. The acting was wonderful and genuine. The emotions were there weather you lived it or not. I sat alone in a theater at mid day, crunching popcorn, eating a pretzel and sipping cherry coke all the while reliving that day when my mother (originally from the Bronx) called me at 7:35 AM to wake me up and tell me that the Twin Towers had been hit. I do not think there was a single person in that theater that was not crunching louder on their popcorn to hid their sniveling as tears drenched their tasty treats. I know I was continually salting my popcorn from time to time. I had half expected to hear little "Left wing" comments, and pokes at the present day events, the war in Iraq, President Bush, and other blip verts of liberal stupidity interjected into the film. There were none. The film was completely devoid of any agenda other than depicting the stories and events surrounding two officers buried alive in the elevator shaft of Tower 5. Stone really stayed on topic. The film was focused on these officers, their families, and the men that God ushered in to save them. I really think Stone will get his Oscar this time, and he truly deserves it. Go see this film. It is completely devoid of conspiracy theories, propaganda, and idiotic pokes at those in charge. In only thing that bothered me about the film was the lack of any Giuliani presence. He was there almost immediately. I am a bit remiss about that. However, I have a feeling that Stone wanted to be consistent and keep any kind of hint of politics out of this film. It's not often something comes out of Hollywood that is not so laden with a liberal diatribe that you feel the need to puke in between scenes. Great job Stone! Anyone else see it? This is the first time since Star Wars I went to see something when it opened. I have to do this more often.
It's the first time in recent memory I did not feel compelled to ask for my money back. Most movies I see give me that urge.
I thought that too, but then again, I remember breaking down several days after the intial shock wore off back then. There was no shame in it. We found out my aunt and uncle made it out of building 5 (where these officers were trapped) and I pretty much cracked. I don't know anyone that did not have some type of emotion back then. Anyway, everyone in the theater will likely be doing much the same. It's dark, sit in back if you are worried about that. I would say a 9, mainly because there was one cheesey part in the movie (about 20 seconds) and perhaps about 1-2 minutes where my attention span was breached. Also, it is very difficult for me to go 10 on anything. Overall, I was glued to the film, 99.99999% of the time.
Mia nice mini review on the movie. I was unsure if i wanted to go see the movie . Most movies out today always have a right/left wing slant to them and i was worried that this movie would fall victium to "politics". After reading what you wrote i will go see the movie. oh and real men cry, just not about stupid stuff. 9/11 is a event that will be forever remembered in history and deserves the emotion that people feel when they think of it.
Seems like a nice movie, i would watch it when its released in India (2 weeks probably). Whats the star cast?
Thank you for posting that review, I'm going to go see it now. Hopefully my emotions wont crack me as much as they did when I saw the events happen live.
Believe me, it will bring it back. But sometimes you really need to be reminded of that pain. "If you can still feel it, it means you're alive". That will mean more to you when you see it btw.
Good words Looks like a good movie. I will watch it. I'm also a little surprised it hasen't received all the negative press and reactions like the other 911 related movies. At least none that I know of. And yep... Cage is awesome.
.i still remember walking back home that day because subway is out..i wasn't sad because the only emotion is fear....during that time i still not sure what really happened because both TV and cellphone is out. it was the third day that i saw the video of what exactly happened...
