I am NOT satisfied with PHPLD.

I bought phpLD to make managing of webdirectories easier. And it's not easier at all. I spent more time on making categories with phpld than making a script for myself to add categories easier.

First of all, when making a subcategory, the combobox with the main categories switches back to the first main categorie, so you need to scroll everytime to the appropiate category! This is not a problem for few categories, but when you want to add 100's of categories, this is a serious pain in the ass! Why is this happening in the THIRD release? It's easy to change.
And also, when adding a category that already exists, no warning or error shows up... The page just reloads without notice...

Second: All categories AND subcategories are listed in a simple paged list. Why no easy to browse tree-structure ? Very hard to find a subcategorie to edit like this...

Third: Approving links... Ok, i receive an e-mail each time someone submits, which is cool. When i receive the e-mail i click on the link and see if the site looks good and has good content. So when i login and go to the submitted links and approve all links at once. This is not possible, need to click on every link and wait a few seconds before the query is executed and a mail is sent. Why is there no bulk approval option ? It's frustrating.

Ok, these are all small things, but they are very annoying. Certainly in a third release, i expect something more user-friendly. Ofcourse, it has some great features also, but it does not feel like a mega time-saver...

Yes, very small. Yes creating categories takes time but how often are you going to create hundreds of categories? But I will agree with you that it would be better not to have to scroll through the drop-down each time.

Have suggested this over at the PHPLD forum? If it is a minor modification, I am sure they could add it to the to-do list for the next release.

Hey fatabbot, to get a list of categories imported without doing it by hand, see: iollo.com/software_test_drive/free_php_link_directory_script_categories_sql_dump

Secondly, the V2 does not have all the functions V3 has as V3 is far more enhanced. I didn't understand your second and third question as you seem to have mixed your sentences up a bit.

Join www.phplinkdirectory.com/forum and we can get this situated for you.

For more than 1 webdirectory, each with different categories, its quite frustrating. It is indeed a minor modification but can save alot of time.

    I have version 3.0.5, the $75 version.
But i want to add categories by hand, not import them.
Why not make one huge form with tree structure, where people can add a main categorie, with subcategories below it. So they can click on a (+) link to add a subcategory in the same <form> ? One click on the submit button creates a category + all its subcategories.

Are you talking about the AJAX mod? Boby a Dev/Admin over at the PHPLD Forum has a mod that does this. You basically go to the submit page, and when you have filled in your information, you have a box that is javascript based, and you simply click on the main category and it drops down to show you the sub-cats.

If so, check out the Mods & Contributions forum at the PHPLD Forum, it has it in there ;)

Did I just read about someone WHINING because they had to scroll? Sigh......

Well, if it helps, 3.06 answers several of your complaints. It has bulk approval, and also has a new Ajax category mod that makes it easier for those people that have difficulty using the wheel on their mouse to scroll.

You have the $75 3.05? You are entitled to a free upgrade to 3.06. I suggest you go get it.

Also, I have a db of over 300 general categories. Send me your email, and Ill give it to you, so life will be easier.

No need to be rude. Look, i buy such a script to make life easier. User-friendly navigation is one of the most important factors in any application.
When someone wants to create 500 - 1000 categories by hand on 10 different directories, scrolling down in a huge list is frustrating.

Even without the drop-down, creating 1000 categories is very long job. Could it be you are frustrated about all the work involved in setting up your directory, and you are taking said frustrations out on the script?

No problem, we appreciate your feedback, and will plan to find a better way! :)

In the meantime, if you want to create the categories by hand, maybe you could create them in excel first, and then just a pay mysql person to import them for you. It would take someone familiar with mysql less than 30 minutes to do this for you.

No not at all. I knew creating categories would take a long time and I bought phpLD to make that job easier. The script i just made to import all categories from a text file took less time to make than creating the categories in the admin area of phpld.

Anyway, case closed. I gave my opinion and i'm sure some people feel the same. For someone with no PHP or mysql experience phpLD might be useful, otherwise you are better of making your own directory management tool and spent the $75 on something else.

Well, Im not intentionally trying to be rude. As a firm supporter of phpLD, I have watched the script go from version 2 (Nice, yet lacking so much), to what it is now. It still is the best link directory script on the market, and for the price, it is hard to complain.

I know people expect perfection when they pay for the script, but there is not a software on the market that does not have to upgrade/update or release bug fixes. If the only thing you can find wrong with it is that you have to scroll the categories, then go to the PHPLD forum and help develop something better. (Ideas are help too)

Definitely an opinion that is not shared by all.
As stated above, we listen to our users, and already have plans for more improvements including some of your recommendations. So you may want to consider reviewing this thread again in 3-6 months, and I will bet you will see we listened.

    Ok that would be great!
For me personal, phpLD would be close to perfect with these features, so i'm looking forward to a new version! With these improvements included i would buy more licenses.

Are all your directories going to have the same categories? If so then you could make one to your specifications and then just copy the SQL data into each of the others and save tons of time.

Quality websites and directories are not made overnight... The job of creating categories, submitting links, etc. can be very time consuming and tedious. If you're going to start a directory put some time and hardwork into it. Otherwise don't start one up if you're just looking to put a generic web directory on the web... we already have 200,000,000 of those.... Best of luck! :)
