Suggestion Previous - Next option on Private messages

    Hello Shawn,

I feel there is a need of "previous message" - "next message" button or link on the private message page. Every time i have to check another message i have to go back to inbox and check, but with this button/link it will be very helpful to check all messages very quickly.

Sounds like reasonable idea. Shawn ultimately determines feasibility and overhead involved in all programming changes. In general the more mods added the harder it is to upgrade to new version of VBulletin.

I like the idea, it would also save on server load.

    Thanks Brian

Mmmm... probably not going to happen to be honest (unless it comes in a version of vBulletin). Would just be extra SQL queries to generate the link, so...

Couldn't it just be done with a template edit?

Nope, you would need to make queries to determine what the next PM actually was do you can make the link.

Hi Shawn, cant' you do it as belows.

    1) If user clicks on next message then add +1 to current pmid and load the url.
    2) If user clicks on previous message then deduct -1 from current pmid and load the url.

I hope this might solve it, this is just a guess, i really have no idea how vbulletin works :D.

There is no way this can work, as "current Pm ID +1" would be another users PM ;)

Right... next or previous pmid (based on the actual number) is most likely not yours.

Is it possible to create search function for private messages??, i.e we should be able to search within pm's.

I figure in the practicality of it, it would only "save" resources in the microcosm that is users with high PM volume, where they could go from 1 to another without having to reload the main PM page.

In the macrocosm that is DP, I presume the highest likelihood is that the # of users who receive single PMs at once far outweigh the number of people who get multiple PMs at once multiplied by the average of that many PMs.

I don't think it's a feasible idea do the the aforementioned. Granted, I have not found (nor am I trying) how to find PM statistics on DP, but that simply seems to be the most likely situation - and it is one in which this idea, although innovative, is not practical.

Yes Shawn, but it doesn't allows to search from content of pm's. It currently allows to search from titles.

Yep... that's intentional. Any changes to that, you would need to petition the developers of vBulletin. Even then, I'm not so sure we would use it. Maintaining search indexes for millions of PMs is a lot of server resources.

I think it's quite a necessary feature. In multiple mails with a single client, they often delete the automatic quote from previous mails that happens in every extended conversations such that I have to go back to the main PM page to see previous mail. I don't think its a very resource intensive feature to code, but then I'm not a programmer. It's especially useful for those engaging in the BST forum as buyers and sellers (buyers specially I guess) often have a couple dozen PM's for a single job.

If you use gmail, you can have the replies emailed to you, and see them in conversation format. If they are within a short timeframe, it will look natural.

Like you said, you're not a programmer. Little by little, things pile up.

You could also contact via email or Messenger.
