I have a dating site (site.com) , if i want to optimize it for a keyword , can i make a sub-page , ie site.com/portal/ and i optimize it for that keyword? in this way will site.com appear in search engines for that keyword or will the sub page (site.com/dating) appear?

on my dating site , there will be a link to the subpage and also i will do link exchanges for site.com not for the sub-page . the sub-page will only have content.

Anyone can plz help me about it?

    thx:)

Yes you can do that, you just have to get backlinks for site.com/portal/ instead of getting links only for site.com

thx , but i cannot get backlinks for site.com only ? since site.com will have a link to site.com/portal/ , will not that be ok? site.com is the main dating site ... site.com/portal/ will be made only to optimize for a keyword so that i can hits to site.com for that keyword.

Not really since the backlinks will be "casting votes for site.com" which means that those backlinks will only affect the ranking of the main site. A good strategy for you is to link to site.com/portal in every one of your internal pages and get a few relevant backlinks to that same page (maybe from dating tips sites).

thx lots but i am still not understanding this part ... suppose i have a site on dogs (dogs.com) made of joomla CMS and the site has hundreds of page ( it has a sitemap also), i will do link exchanges for dogs.com only and not for all the sub-pages on dogs.com , right? this same principle does not apply for the dating site example? should i not do link exchanges for the main dating site (site.com ) or in this case i should do it for the sub-page?

you should do link exchange for subpages too. Search engines treat "site.com" and "site.com/page" like different pages, so if you get backlinks to the main page, only the rank of the main page will see the benefits.

If you want a certain subpage to rank high for certain keyowrds you should get at least some backlinks for it.:)
