Comcast is blocking Port 25

I was in touch with Comcast today because all of a sudden they began blocking my port 25. Now normally, I know it could be because of a worm or something of the sort, but this time, I was informed that Comcast is now going to begin blocking port 25 in most of the major markets! I think that is a drastic measure and it will hurt them in the end. Agree or disagree?

how will it hurt them? Port 25 is typically used for e-mail servers. I don't think they want customers running e-mail servers from their home pc's anyway. It's a smart security move if anything

port 80 would be a problem for webservers, but port 25 could easily be used to send mass spam from your home pc with an smtp server. That's probably their main concern.

It is also used to send email from a client such as Outlook Express and Thunderbird. They are making it very annoying for their own customers to use email. To me that is going to hurt them. It is too much iof a hassle to configure your mail client to use a different port.

Could be a hassle at first, but I'm sure they will send out with their new comcast signups pre-configure outlook that will listen on a port other than 25.

Adelphia had a problem with people using programs like mail-loop from their home machines.

yep, I used to run a webserver on my adelphia account back in 99-2000 or 2001 before they blocked port 80 and started cracking down.

The least they could have done was give us a warning. I mean I get mounds of email per day and I am sure you can imagine what a pain in the but it would be to use webmail each time.

oh yeah, they definitely should have sent out notice for something like that along with instructions for making the changes on popular mail clients.

I run all of my port 80 through Comcast - and they blow!

    back on-topic, I don't see how blocking port-25 is a bad thing.

unless you are trying to run an email server without paying for a static-ip; i think that's where the problem comes in :p

Absolutley not. I do not use the email for purposes such as these. All I do is receive mail and send mail mainly from my hosting company and my forums. No spam or anything is sent. It is a big deal because to use Comcast on any other port requires authentication. You can not authenticate an email address that is not on Comcast on that server. Therefore my other emails do not work to send email.
