Is google banned in China now?
Anyone else in China, I'd appreciate a response, neither me nor my friend can get on it, with the standard blocked:

    Edit:

Seems to be back now, but it was just out in Harbin, Beijing and Shanghai.
All with firewall symptoms, scared me good.

its probably just overloaded servers. i dont think they are going to ban google anywhere, it is simply firmly entrenched in peoples minds.

This is a very common issue in China. Ive never heared of google beeing blocked, but I lived in China many years and I know how their internet works. The have a system where the government can block any domain name and if there is a popular site where people say something bad about the government or maybe if a company pays the government to block foreign competition. The government can simply switch you off without reason.

For example... When people talked about the problems between China and Tibet ( just before the 2008 olympics ), blogspot and youtube were blocked for 2 weeks.

A week after the sichuan earthquake, hotmail and blogspot were disabled for 5 days.

They could easily block adsense or google for any reason - or without reason.
Maybe if they start a chinese adsense-like company, they switch off google forever, so that advertising money to stays in the country.

Many times I suspected that tudou.com pays the government to disable youtube....

    Some sites are blocked permanently.

CHECK THE "Great Chinese Firewall" lol

I have a feeling it is partially automated, it doesn't feel like a network issue, I know network issues, and I know the firewall all too well...
I'm almost feeling Google got automatically blocked, and got itself unblocked really fast, or some type of error on their part by someone.
Also I believe they already blocked Google once in 2006 as I recall.
Whatever the reasons, I'm glad it was only for about 5-10 minutes or so... The fact it was country wide scared me...
