What kind of blogging themes are popular nowadays? Should you only put up articles around your theme?

Huh? I think you haven't had any replies because people are unsure what you are asking. And popular doesn't matter. Just find what works for you.

Make your blog posts look simple in design, make your headers and sidebars full of gadgets which look nice.

See popular blogs like Mashable, TechCrunch or forums like Digital point

all are using simple design so that content is highlighted not design

So use any simple and light theme and concentrate on your content

Themes that are simple and appealing to the eye are good. I would only put content on your blog that goes with the theme of your blog. Since blogs are free on WordPress and other sources, you can have more than one blog and each can have a different theme.

You are contradicting yourself. You said simple but you want the headers and sidebars littered with gadgets? Now what make them simple?

I agree, we better use simple and light theme.
For the articles, it is better if we focus on our theme, that's for sure.

Just make it look professional with unique content and no vulgar ads to annoy you visitors and you'll do good.

My favorite WP theme is Thesis. It is a premium theme, but well worth the cost. It's pretty much SEO friendly out of the box even without All-In-One SEO plugin. It has a very clean look (check out the examples of sites peeps have made with it by clicking on thumbnails) out of the box, but can be "dressed" up to have different looks and feels.

It's well written with all customizations done though hooks in customfunctions.php and all css changes in custom.css files (if you're smart) which are both isolated in a custom folder so that when you upgrade to a new version of Thesis, you don't have to recode your customizations in the new version of Thesis.

It's also used by lots of SEO professionals like Matt Cutts, Rae Hoffman, and Michael Gray.

I highly recommend it if you're looking for a nice theme.
