I have found that one of the determining factors regarding Pagerank is the rate of growth of links.
If you start out building links at a frenetic pace and get, say. a PR5. You then slow down building ans slow your internal content creation to a point where you get a static or negative rise in links to your site.(see internal links on google webmaster tools) then your pagerank will start to decline.
Pagerank is a progressive indicator of a sites growth and popularity with other sites. If you stand still you will suffer.
As regards pagerank v SERPS, it doesn't seem to corrolate at all

Great post - really good write up and it's good to see that the crawl rate is affected. Hopefully I can get my site to around pr2 after my first pr update and then higher before the next one! Not been working on it long so we will see what happens.

NYTimes versus a person's personal blog -- NYTimes is crawled I believe every 2-4 seconds and sometimes if the site is at slow times, the crawl rate is less than every 30 seconds, still -- PR has been known to affect PR for years but Matt Cutts finally said it was true =oP lol secretive Google

Lots of opinions in this thread — some of them well-informed, some of them not. Here's the only opinion that counts for me (Google's):

"Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results."
In simple terms that means: higher PR —> higher SERPs.

If Google ever changes that, then I'll join the currently misinformed "PR is useless" crowd, but not before. And I'll continue to ignore the predictable, irrelevant "my PR1 page beat out a PR5 page" posts. There are numerous factors other than PR which can account for that.

PR is important but it is ONE component -- There are over 1,000 other algorithms which mix the rankings around. Trustrank, Hilltop, the new Caffeine, etc. etc. There are so many, one good place was aaron wall's seobook ebook which stated a lot.

PageRank is the wheel in an old clock, there are MANY other parts including small wheels which make up that full clock, that is the value of PR -- it's important but not the catch all, be all.

Of course it does, why else would it still be here!!

I can tell you from my experience, I think it may effect crawl rate.

Since my PR went from a 3 to a 5 on one my sites, my site is indexed instantly when I add new content.
I also had another site that was also a PR5 and went to down to a 4 and then a 3, the crawl is significantly slower.

    Just me experience :)

    Thank you Jim,

Good to see another smart mind still at DP.

It's just a real shame to see all the newbies saying stuff like 'PR doesnt matter when considering rankings' when they have no knowledge they just see other people writing it and jumping on the bandwagon.

Perhaps all the seasoned individuals like us should form our own network or something.

To all the newbies out there, do you see how the individuals who sound like pros such as myself, Jim, SeoIbiza say one thing and all the individuals who have the status of 'peon' or 'grunt' as their status say the total opposite. Makes me chuckle.....Still freedom of speech and all that..... Even if they are wrong! :)

Yes PR does accept the crawl rate. I saw this in several websites. My higher PR websites are crawled more often and other websites which do not have that much PR are not crawled that much. It all depends on the amount of links that you get. If you get more then google is directed to your site more.

Of course, high PR is pretty useless.
So, if you own the PR5+ domain, I am willing to help you with that burden.
I offer one my PR 1 domain for one your PR 5 domain.
    My loss is your gain.
But, if you don't have high PR...
it is better not to say anything.

Linking, only linking can increase your homepage pr, internal pages can acquire pr through good site navigation and inbound links.

just get on with link building and your pr will look after itself.

well its not as clear as that, what about tools that encourage Google to visit, what about regular updating this can be much more effective.

I think that PR just make your backlink last longer that my experience not sure about others. When i link to high PR my backlink seem to last longer than a backlink with a high PR

PR DOES NOT EFFECT SITE RANKINGS PERIOD!

it might effect crawl rate but it does not effect site rankings, i have many sites pr0 (when i start site) and then i do SEO and its on #1 for that term, and guess what im PR 0 at that time

will you f***ing people read the WHOLE THREAD before chipping in with your nonsense?

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOOLBAR PR AND REAL PR!!

YOU CANNOT SEE REAL PR, BUT IT DEFINITELY AFFECTS YOUR RANKINGS.

THE FACT THAT YOU ARE STATING "PR0 WITH A #1 RANKING" MARKS YOU AS UTTERLY CLUELESS. BECAUSE ANYBODY TAKING NOTICE OF THE TOOLBAR READING IS EXACTLY THAT - UTTERLY CLUELESS

you will DEFINITELY NOT RANK #1 FOR ANYTHING WITH NO REAL PR.

dont believe me? remove all your links to your site and see what happens ;)
