Is submitting to directories worth it?

I noticed people in the classifieds section of digitalpoint are always trying to sell directory submission services... like 1000 submissions for $5 bucks or whatever the price is...

Is it worth it? I though Google doesn't follow directories anymore?

    What are your thoughts?

    a) google value the links from moderated directories.
    b) well known strong directories like google, dmoz or yahoo dirs will give you value
    c) directories direct from your niche is ok to.

all others are wasting time now..

Directories for the most part are useless for traffic flow. The Backlink is the primary goal in directory submission. I have never met anyone who does directory searches for looking up a business, Its usally the other way around. If you are listed in a directory you get call and email from someone trying to sell you something.

I find that it is usually simply something that my clients like or are used to hearing is needed. As a result of experience, I can let you know that directories are usually not worth the time or money spent in obtaining listings. The major exceptions are those which mannerboy pointed out.

However, if you do submit your site to directories, ensure it is done manually. Using software is againsts Google's TOS and could possibly hurt your site's rankings.

The right directories (DMOZ/niche-related) are good.

I agree with most that has been said here. Directories are still good to submit to if done right as stated above. But a directory services may do you more harm then good. Most search engines like Google track your backlinks and if you average lets say 20 IBL a month then all the sudden you get 1k backlinks in a month it will more then likely trigger a big red flag. Your best bet is to submit them by hand to high PR directories in the right categories. This will keep the stream of links coming in at a steady rate. Like your web site design consistency is key. You can gradually increase the number of directories you submit to but you must say consistent and not do 100 this month and 0 the next. Also remember that Google does not show all of your IBL and your better off viewing them in Yahoo. Do not forget it can take months before your link is accepted if it even is.
    Directories down fall:
Most of your lower PR directories "and even some higher ones" are here today and gone tomorrow. This is why you must keep submitting to different directories every month. This is a never ending job.
One more thing to consider about directories that most people don't. Most people know that the closer to the root of the site a page is the more weight it is given. I'm talking URL length here. So keep in mind the longer the URL string is to get to your listing the less weight it will have.
    example
    site.com/ = best
    site.com/folder = not as good
    site.com/folder/folder = worse
    Matt Cutts stated
if there are more than 5 words Google algorithms typically will just weight those words less and just not give you as much credit.

    Hope this helps

    So, for example:

1234.com is better than 12345.com and so on?

Directory submission is a bit obsolete now but its still works for getting good PR and traffic as well.
