Of course Google can be defeated. Google is a for-profit organization. If a non-profit organization or collaboration builds a search engine that returns more desirable results then yes Google could fade away. I'm thinking sort of how Firefox took on Internet Explorer with a world wide network of contributors.

The only way Google is making money is mostly through their advertising business, AdSense, and AdWords. I don't see Google losing it's popularity for another 10-15 years, they will probably be the leading search engine until a new type of technology. Google is completely destroying the search engine market. I don't think any type of non-profit organization will be able to compete with any huge search engine, ( Bing, Google, Yahoo ). Just my two cents, and my personal opinion.

    Nobody really.
Google has become so popular that it is used both as a verb and a synonym for "search"

No one can kill Google, however no one can predict if they didn't slowly breed to death if some innovation comes into play which makes them obsolete similar to what happen to Lynx.

Nothing can beat google. Bing can try, but google is ultimate king hands down.

Either blackhat or whitehat, google will always be everyone's trusty website.

I can kill Google. What i mean is, i will kill google.

Let me explain how im going to do this.

it will take a large amount of money and people with skills. The way google, bing & yahoo display results is based on how many backlinks the page/website has and of coarse content. But, me or some future search engine will have to display search results in a different way.

Lets say you google, "2001 BMW 325I For Sale In Seattle Washington", what you will get on the first pages of the search engines is results from autos.yahoo, autotrader, cars.com, edmunds, motortrend, and a bunch of other car classified websites. The only problem with the results is, you land on a page that gives you a option to click "search" for that specific model and when you do search, you have zero listings. While some other website with a lower rank might actually have that car listed on their website, but people wont find it.

If a search engine could display results based on the content of a certian page rather than page title + rank + backlinks, etc, people would have a better chance of finding what they are looking for. Yes if this ever happens, there would be many new websites, new rich people, etc... The downside would be, most backlink builders and seo companies will go out of business, but, instead of paying for backlinks and seo, people would have to spend money on creating unique and good content for their users to enjoy.

My point is, websites/website pages with the best matching content to a search phrase would rank the highest rather than a clean page with a full title and a high page rank with zero content.

Less time spent on internet looking for something means more time to spend doing something else. What would people go for? most internet users are people that dont know anything about rank, alexa, etc, when they see the page title with what they are looking for, they click on it, they find nothing, they go to the second result, so on and so fourth... Why search engines do that? Make more money. You get the point...

No one can beat Google in next 5 yeras. Google has put in a lot of hard work in making its search engine.

I work as a rater for google, and when deciding priority of pages, we not only see search results of google, but those of yahoo and bing as well. Google might go to lower spots in social networking or mail service, but Google search and Google adsense rock ;)

Who has made Google what it is today? We the people, so assume if all on the planet decide not to use Google for a day / and extend it to week and to month ... that would be the only cause other than legal issues that could bring them down.

Google is doing a good job though - so why would you post such a question!
