I seem to be in favor of joomla to run a majority of my sites. I pay for hosting (rent a dedicated server to run all my sites on) as well.

I have tried most the open source CMS before settling for the followings
E107 – The first CMS that I had tried.
Drupal (The Best) , Moodle ( I love it) , wordpress( Not exactly a cms but still …)
    Forum – PHPBB and SMF

None of the above. I don't run adsense on any of the scripts you mentioned above. :)
However, I do use other scripts that are very easy to customize and easy to integrate adsense ads.

Installing most of the cms is an easy job ... but customizing it for your own purpose does take a lot of time & effort...Learning how the cms works also quite easy. One can easily learn e107/joomla/worpress by trial & error method. But its better to go thru the documents of that cms .. But there are few cms (like drupal , typo3) which have many functionalities and it takes some effort to take advantage of all the facilities .

    running an own php-based site
    planning to try out mambo/joomla
blogs and forums are not really my thing

I actually prefer programming my own stuff. otherwise I end up doing the trial and error "let's see what this does" without reading documentation and just playing around. Doing my own stuff I learn more. It takes much more time though. I guess if I want to make some money out of it it'll have to be optimized somehow.
Good luck with your stuff though.

I like blogger for the same reason the thread starter stated!! You can just pick a topic and begin creating right away for free. I only have one blog that is actually earning me $$$ and I don't know it started really. I'd like to apply the same method to my other blogs, but I have no idea what I did.

I'd like to try out wordpress next. ;)
